I. Introduction: Apple scab is of major economic importance in the mid-Atlantic region.

Pecan scab is readily controlled with properly applied sprays of effective recommended fungicides, in conjunction with strict adherence to recommended sanitary practices, or by use of resistant cultivars.

Apple Scab
Symptoms: Olive green, velvety spots 1/4 inch or more in diameter, appear on leaves of Crabapple (Malus) and Apple trees. The leaves may also turn yellow and drop; often the entire tree may defoliate by mid-summer.

Apple Scab - Apple scab is an apple tree disease that leaves warty, brown bumps on the leaves and fruit. It is a fungus that primarily affects trees in areas that have high humidity.

Apple scab is a fungal disease that causes black splotches on leaves and fruit. It is most common and severe in the eastern U.S. where summer rainfall is common, but it occurs in all apple-growing regions.

Potato scab also can be a problem. This can be avoided by raising the pH to slightly acidic levels.

Rotating your crop on a three-year cycle prevents scab (Streptomyces scabies), a disease that causes corky scabs to form on roots; and soft rot, which causes water-soaked spots on the leaves and roots.

Resistant or field immune to apple scab, highly resistant to cedar apple rust and fire blight, and variably moderately resistant to susceptible to powdery mildew.

The most common disease problem is pecan scab. This disease causes sooty black spots on the leaves and malformation of the nuts. The nuts often are covered in black spots also.

Gardeners who do not yet have a crabapple may avoid or lessen the problem by purchasing a scab-resistant crabapple variety. For existing crabapples, now is the time to spray fungicide to protect against scab.

Spray against apple and pear scab and powdery mildew, and also pests such as capsid bug, greenfly and winter moth caterpillar with an appropriate fungicide or insecticide. Check the manufacturers instructions for the most suitable time.

A low pH will help control scab.
Late blight, the cause of the Irish potato famine, turns the foliage black, then moldy. Burn the foliage. The potatoes can still be harvested, but you should wait several weeks.

In apples and pears the common diseases include scab and fire blight. With other fruits, such as raspberries, make sure you buy from a nursery that propagates from virus-free plants.

The most common infections of vegetable plants are cucumber anthracnose, powdery mildew, scab, fusarium wilt and verticillium wilt.

Common diseases of the camellia include algae leaf spot, scab, spider mites, camellia scale, which can usually be diagnosed through anomalies in the leaves.

Brown rot of peaches, black rot of grapes and scab of pecans are spread by spores carried by air currents. Once plants become infected, rain or irrigation water splashing on diseased parts further spreads the pathogens.

Expect mature cukes in about 58 days from sowing seed in warm soil. Plants are resistant to scab and tolerant to powdery and downy mildews. 'Diva' is the only slicing cucumber you need to grow in your garden.

Eat light meals. Discuss heat related problems that may be complicated by medications with a physician. Wear gloves. Soak cuts and punctures in a mild salt solution (1 teaspoon per cup of water) until scab forms.

Apple scab affects the fruit and the leaves, which transport it. Clean them up when they fall, disposing of them at the tip to avoid spreading the disease. Fire blight is a great problem with all the Rosaceae family.
