Screening Plants
Plants used as screens in gardens are not always well defined for that purpose. A plant used for screening can take many forms, and are not always just climbers or plants used for hedges.

Screening a garden design is like framing a picture: it can contribute to or detract from the aesthetic. Frame your garden well with a living screen, wooden fence or one of many other beautiful options.

Some screening situations may require less height such as a divider between houses or screening from the street. In the 4-5 foot height range, try floribunda roses such as Betty Prior (vivid pink), or Simplicity (dark pink).

Visual Screens A visual screen in the landscape can help create privacy and also block out unwanted views or sounds.

Use a modern garden screen
An oriental-inspired screen is an ideal way to close off a perimeter of the garden without feeling boxed in.
Get the look: If you have a small garden, keep the colour light to avoid dark shadows in the closed areas.

Sometimes wire sieves are too fine for screening still chunky compost. To move things along, without losing your sanity, try screening with a wider mesh. An easy alternative is to use and old plastic milk crate.

In the heat of the summer try growing lettuce under a shade cloth. This one is a window screen.

If you plan to use your compost in potting soil or to topdress the lawn-or for any other purpose where you might not want large clumps, stones or other debris-a screen (also called a sifter, sieve or "riddle") can be very helpful.
