Don't confuse this disease with less-serious scurf, which creates small, round, dark spots on tuber surfaces but doesn't affect eating quality.

One cultivar has red foliage all year with silver scurfing at the base of the leaves, making it a particularly attractive plant, even when not in flower. If plants are germinated from seeds a plant can take 10 to 15 years to reach a mature size.

Add compost to sweetpotato beds sparingly; too much and the roots will develop a skin condition called "scurf." The preferred soil pH is 5.8 to 6.
