Secateurs
Use for cutting through branches up to 1.5cm to 2cm (0.6 to 0.8in) in diameter. Keep them sharp and wipe off the sap when you've finished using them.

 


Garden Secateurs
A sharp pair of secateurs is vital for pruning rose bushes. Important for me is that they are not too big because I have small hands. If you use garden secateurs that are too large the job will be very tiring.

Secateurs are small, easy to use and have a safety catch for when not in use. The blade is on the upper side and the lower side is for leverage. Larger, two handled secateurs give greater leverage and are useful for cutting larger branches.

Secateurs are used for cuts up to 1 inch, and are the most common hand tool a gardener owns, purchasing the highest quality pair you can afford will pay dividends over the years.

Secateurs and loppers are essential in the majority of gardens. Secateurs are well-
balanced hand cutters which are used in pruning and for cutting back herbaceous
plants.

When you buy secateurs make sure the blade always stays sharp to avoid damaging the plant. Look for models that have blades that can be sharpened or replaced, models with tension control and with sizes that best fit your hands.

The types of tools to use are secateurs, heavy bypass loppers or hedge sheers. Make sure that your pruning gear is clean this will reduce the occurance of any dead stem, or die back of stems. You can cut back the hardwood if required.

Remove all the leaves with secateurs and trim to approximately 4-6 inches long. With a sharp knife or secateurs, make a cut at about 45 degrees just below the eye or node at the base of the cutting.

The spade may be Tool Numero Uno, but the pruners (or secateurs) run a very close second. There are a lot of different types out there but if you are only going to buy one pair of shears get a really good pair of by-pass cut shears.

Using a pair of secateurs or a pruning saw, carefully remove affected branches, leaving a clean cut that will heal quickly. Also remove any crossing or rubbing branches that are causing obstruction.

A pair of reasonable quality, large secateurs and a pair of lopping shears make most pruning jobs quick and simple. For large branches a pruning saw or even a chainsaw may be necessary.
