Seed swapping is a fun way to keep from wasting the extra seeds that you so loving collected. Basically, it amounts to trading vegetable, fruit, or flower seeds with other gardening enthusiasts.

The big disadvantage of outdoor seed sowing is that one sacrifices control over the circumstances under which the seeds will germinate. In an indoor hotbed, or coldframe, conditions of moisture, heat, etc., can be regulated.

Stratification - Oftentimes when someone refers to stratification, they are referring to the process of cold treating a seed in order to break its dormancy.

Prepare the seed
Whether you're planting indoors or out, it's a good idea to break or soften the hard seed coat before planting.

Choose grass seed that matches your site. If the spot receives less than 6 hours of direct sun a day, choose a shade-tolerant mix that includes tall fescue or fine-leaf fescue. For more information, see Choosing Lawn Grasses in the Lawn Care Library.

Seeds come in hundreds of different shapes and sizes, but they all have the same purpose-to reproduce.

Pod seed - a dry calyx containing a mature or maturing seed.
Pot-bound - bound, stifled or inhibited from normal growth, by the confines of a container: Root systems become pot bound.

Self Seed: Plants releasing seeds spontaneously which grow into new plants.
Semi-Ripe Cutting: A cutting from wood that is half ripened.
Sepals: These form the calyx and are the green petal like covering of the flowerbud before it opens.

Grass seed
Grass seed mixtures are available to suit different situations and uses. There are mixtures for shady or dry sites, hard-wearing mixtures for family lawns or fine-grass mixtures to give a ‘bowling green' effect.
