If pots or seed trays (flats) are used, then any compost that is suitable for seed
sowing can be employed. Each kind has its advantages and disadvantages. Soil-

There are several options for starting seeds indoors. You can start seeds in a community tray, packs, or Jiffy pots.

I did the bare minimum amount of pruning and mulching before the winter rain set in, the vegetable beds got a cover crop too late to do them any good, and my seed table is filled, not with seed trays, but with unopened mail.

Bring them on in early spring in seed trays and then prick them out into flower pots. Keep them in a sheltered place (or greenhouse or conservatory) until they look big enough and strong enough to plant out.

Place the seed tray in the refrigerator for a few days and then into a cool area, such as a basement or cellar, or on a cool tile or cement floor.
Germination usually occurs within 14-20 days.

Darkness and cool temperatures aid germination, so the seed tray should be covered to keep out light. The seed tray should be kept in a cool location during germination, preferably between 40 degrees and 60 degrees.

The disease is airborne and can spread quickly from one seed tray to another. The fungal spores take root in your soil, and quickly spreads across the seed tray, jumping to other trays with ease.

Flat: In the USA, a shallow seed tray.
Floret: A small flower, usually, that forms part of a larger flowerhead.
Flower: The part of the plant with reproductive parts usually with petals. A double flower with one or more rows of petals.

Sow seeds, well spaced, in seed trays. Transplant the seedlings when the plants have grown to 4' tall. Plant outside when the garden soil is workable and danger of frost has passed.

White or colored plastic markers are ideal for identifying the eager shoots in crowded seed trays. They are easy to read, and pencil marks can be erased or rubbed away, so the labels can be reused.

Each batch is carefully labelled, and seed trays are covered and placed on a heat bed set at 32 degrees C. When seedlings have four leaves they are individually potted up into 15 cm pot.

A seedling heat mat is helpful for germination, but not critical if you place the seed trays near some warmish source till the sprouts are all in.

Crocosmia can also be started from seeds. Plant seeds in seed trays, about 1/4" deep, in seed starting soil. Seedlings can be transplanted outdoors in late spring.

Pricking out-Transferring thickly sown seedlings from the pot, pan, or seed tray in which they were sown into a larger container, giving them more space to develop.

Especially small seeds (including nicotiana, petunia and snapdragon) should be broadcast on a small seed tray. Once the seedlings have their first true leaves, carefully tease them apart and transplant into separate growing cells.

Watering
