When it comes to buying seedlings, there are a few things to remember.

Don't drown the seedlings: Starting seedlings indoors is a gratifying experience, however, watering of these youngsters can be damaging.

What seedlings can you grow with your propagation units ?
Flowers seedlings - About anything you can buy as seed. But, make sure it is correct for the season you are planting.

Your seedlings will grow in nearly any kind of container, but there are certain things to consider.

While seedlings are growing in the containers we water them lightly each day in a soluble fertilizer at about one-quarter the usual strength (a scant quarter-teaspoon to a quart of water, if one tablespoon per gallon, a common formula, ...

** Thin seedlings to increase air circulation.
** Provide as much sunlight as possible.
** Let the surface of the soil dry out between watering. Watering from the bottom is preferred.

Other common seedling pests include cutworms, flea beetles, slugs and, occasionally, millipedes. Remember that floating row covers aren't meant to control these pests.

Always handle a seedling by the leaves and NEVER by the stem. Even slight pressure can permanently damage the stem, whereas the plant will grow another leaf if it is damaged.

During the first few weeks of growth your little carrot seedlings are forming their tapered root. If they encounter rocks in the soil, or if the soil is too compacted or there has been a huge rain storm this could deform your carrots.

Seedlings
Once the seeds have germinated and the seedlings emerge, they need light and plenty of it. Take the cover off the flats if you have been using one. Unlike the germinating seeds, seedlings need direct sunlight.

Seedling Heat Mat - To get the young guys going, sometimes it’s necessary to provide a little help. A heat mat gives radiant heat to the roots of young plants, about 10 degrees higher than the ambient temperature.

Once the seeds have germinated, don't forget to protect tender seedlings. Place them in a shaded location, preferably one that gets morning sun and afternoon shade.

SEEDLINGS
Seedlings need at least 12 to 16 hours of light a day. Remove the covering and place at a window or under grow lights. If placed by a window, turn the plants one quarter turn a day.

Seedling, potted or field-grown: When purchasing perennials, try to get the largest, most mature plant that you can afford. The bigger the plant, the more quickly it will fill out and the sooner it will begin blooming.

selective pesticide A pesticide that kills or controls only certain kinds of plants or animals. For example, 2,4-D kills broadleaf lawn weeds but leaves grass largely unharmed.

Buy a seedling or young cherry blossom plant from your local nursery. If you buy from a local nursery, that allows you to get plants that can grow in your zone. Cherry blossoms grow well in zones 9 to 11.

Water Seedlings Properly. They must not dry out, nor be soggy. It is best to water them by adding water to the tray that the containers are sitting in, not by watering from above, as they are very delicate.

A good way to increase humidity around potted seedlings is to set a couple of seedling pots in a larger container of pebbles.

Moving Seedlings Outdoors
Plants started indoors will not have been exposed to full sun, wind, or widely fluctuating temperatures.

Moving seedlings into the garden
Two weeks before you're ready to transplant, 'harden" your new seedlings by taking them outdoors for a few hours each day.

1. After seedlings have developed two or three sets of leaves, they'll be crowded and need thinning. Remove extra plants to achieve the correct spacing and allow the remaining plants room to grow.
Step 2.

Seedlings must receive bright light after germination. Place them in a window facing south, if possible. If a large, bright window is not available, place the seedlings under a fluorescent light.

Seedlings are ready to transplant at about 6-8 weeks old approximately 4 weeks before and up to 2 weeks after the last spring frost is expected in your area.

Seedling rootstocks of at least pencil diameter are usually the easiest for beginners, although both smaller and much larger stocks can be budded successfully. Image 3 shows three seedlings, all of which are buddable.

Seedlings are easily pulled or hoed from the garden. Older plants are more difficult to pull out and may scatter seeds in the process. Mulch will prevent seeds already in the soil from germinating.

Seedlings and vegetables that are flowering or setting fruit need more water than mature ones.
Planning ahead? A drip-irrigation system is the best method. Group plants with similar watering needs.

Seedlings will emerge in roughly 4-6 days. Thin to about 2" apart. Water continuously and thoroughly. Do not over-fertilize radish plants as this is hard on their tubers.

Seedlings yearn to get out of their containers and into the ground, an urge shared with the gardener. The bend of winter has led us into the bend of spring.

Seedlings must be handled very carefully, as they are delicate and often brittle. Never
be tempted to hold a seedling by its root or stem as irreparable damage can be
caused. Always hold it by the edge of the seed leaf.

Seedlings of 'Laciniata' do not have the cut-leafed trait, and so it is necessary to propagate the cut-leaf form vegetatively.

A seedling heat mat is helpful for germination, but not critical if you place the seed trays near some warmish source till the sprouts are all in.

As seedlings reach about three inches in height they are ready to be thinned.

The seedlings can be planted outdoors when evening temperatures remain above 50°F (10°C) in a sunny, well-drained location.
A Trouble-Free Plant ...

Set seedlings or cuttings out to root in the spring, after any frost danger is past. If you are planting tuberous begonias, these are propagated with tubers, therefore their name.

When seedlings are three or four inches tall, it's time to transplant them into individual peat pots or packs that hold several plants each. Feed them every two weeks (weekly for wave petunias) with diluted liquid fertilizer.

Space seedlings or thin plants to 24" apart, in rows two feet apart. They will quickly grow and spread, if allowed. They will tolerate a little crowding.
Balm Lemon prefers moist soil. Water them during dry periods, at least once a week.

Plant seedlings in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the area by removing weeds and digging in lots of compost or composted manure, adding extra compost and coarse sand to heavy clay soil.

As the seedlings grow thin out the two weaker ones of the three and keep the surrounding soil well hoed.
Never use stable manure for parsnip as this can lead to the roots becoming forked.

- When seedlings are about 2 inches tall and have at least one pair of true leaves, snip off all but the strongest plant in each pot at soil level.

If your seedlings are growing tall and floppy it probably means they aren't getting enough light. Light deficient seedlings grow tall, thin, and eventually weak as they reach towards the closest light source.

Once the seedlings start to emerge from the soil the light should be 3-6″ above the top of the seedlings with 12-14 hours of exposure. If the leaves start to turn downward or look scorched, then the light is too close.

Cantaloupe seedlings are sensitive and easily disturbed by weeding and thinning. Final spacing of seedlings should planted in rows about 2 feet apart with plants 5 feet apart. Thin the seedlings when they become about 4 inches high.
