While a big selling point of the Knockout roses is their 'Self-Cleaning' nature, the occasional deadheading pruning will indeed improve their overall performance in growth and bloom production.

 


Don't be fooled into thinking that fertilizer spreaders are self-cleaning or will unclog when fertilizer is run through them. The right thing to do when you have fertilizer or other mixtures caked into openings is to clean it out.

For outdoor beds, seed-sown bedding geraniums, such as 'Elite' or 'Orbit', which branch freely and produce a summer-long display of self-cleaning flowers that need no grooming, are simply unbeatable.

Plants are prolific bloomers and are more or less self-cleaning. The petals shatter and drop, and new flowers cover the spent blooms. While not necessary for producing additional bloom, some may feel deadheading enhances a neat appearance.

Self-cleaning. Plants with this tag will often drop their flowers to make room for new ones. Although this may seem fickle, it's actually a good thing.
Naturalize. Plants that "naturalize" or are "carefree" will self-seed with abandon.
