Shade Loving Plants
Ten easy care plants I use in my shade gardens:
1. Hosta Paul's Glory - wonderful plant, one of the larger varieties, beautiful foliage that seems to glow in shade.
2. Sweet Woodruff - delicate white flowers in spring.

Shade gardeners often lament that there are limited plant choices for the shade garden. Untrue. Many plants that are known as sun lovers, like daylilies, actually enjoy the relief of partial shade, especially in hot areas.

Shade Cloth
Light is one of the most important factors in plant growth. Without it plants are unable to carry out the process of photosynthesis by which they produce their food.

Shademaster Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos 'Shademaster') has a rounded canopy and provides light shade that allows sunlight to filter through, making this a good tree for use near a lawn.

It is rare to find a garden with absolutely no shady areas, but that doesn't mean that this part has to be neglected, since this is the perfect habitat for some popular shade-loving plants.

Shade over your pleasure garden is not really a handicap.
In my own case, the shade garden gives me more pleasure for less work than the sunny garden. Not, however, if it is dry shade filled with tree roots.

Shade, whether cast by trees, buildings or structures, presents a different environment than a typical Colorado landscape. Often homeowners believe plants won't grow in these areas.

Shades -- in this case a rather dark shade of yellow -- have a low-key effect, making the scene more somber. Their color holds up in the middle part of the day when there is plenty of light.

Shade Netting
Hot, summer sun can affect the lush, moist flavor of homegrown lettuce, making it bitter; a few days of hot sun will make lettuce bolt to seed, ruining it for the season.

Shade-tolerant warm-season grasses include St. Augustine and Zoysiagrass. Centipedegrass is fairly tolerant, but Bermudagrass and Buffalograss are wimps when it comes to the dark.

The shade canopy tends to moderate temperature fluctuations by lowering daytime temperature and keeping it warmer at night by preventing release of the heat. This moderating effect on temperature helps humidity remain high both day and night.

Deep shade occurs beneath evergreens or in narrow spaces between tall buildings and can be a challenging environment in which to garden.

Full shade is cast by the thick, broad canopies of deciduous trees like Norway maples. Although shafts of light may reach the plants beneath them, these shafts usually don't remain for long.

Many shade- and moisture-loving plants flower early in spring when sun and moisture are plentiful. This is because in nature, rain is typically abundant in late winter and spring, but conditions dry radically as summer begins.

Shade Plants for Hanging Baskets

Sun or Shade?
Close your eyes and think of Italy... hot sun... Italian foods... basil, oregano, garlic... These are must-have-sun herbs. This is where they thrive, and where they taste best. Add to this list fennel, chamomile, and cilantro.

Shaded flower beds and heavily-mulched gardens are ideal habitats for slugs, as they need high humidity and cool temperatures to survive. Slugs cannot survive in direct sunlight for long. Without hiding places during the day, they will quickly die.

The shade loving agapanthus 'Adelaide' makes a welcome addition to the shady garden, with its soft blue flowers. Combine with a foreground planting of tradescantias to create a cool oasis of vibrant blues and greens.
