Short-day plants, such as chrysanthemums, kalanchoe, azaleas and begonias, will thrive on less than 12 hours of light per day. In fact, these plants must usually go through a series of even shorter days before they will set buds and flower.

Fall and winter are the seasons here for short-day onion seed, as well as onion and garlic sets. Let's not forget pak choi (or bok choy), cabbage, Swiss chard and celery, and it's definitely the right season for sugar peas.
October Poinsettias are short-day plants, meaning their bud set is affected by the length of daylight. To re-bloom, poinsettias need about 10 weeks with 12 hours or less of sunlight per day.

Some vegetables also have particular varieties better suited to grow in cold, short-day climates. Other varieties are specially adapted to growing in long, hot days, extending your growing season into the summer.
Onions form bulbs in response to the number of daylight hours. In Canada, grow the long-day varieties because short-day onions produce smaller bulbs.
