Side Dressing
Side-dressing is where you apply vegetable garden fertilizer around your plant. Really good if you get a lot of rain and you think nutrients are washing away. Don't use too much.

Side dressing with compost is preferred over fertilizing Caryopteris plants. Too much fertilizer makes for a leafy plant with less blooms.

Side dressing is done after the seeds have come up. Place some fertilizer along side the plants (about 6-8 inches away) and mix in with the soil. Foliar feeding is a good way to get absorption within minutes of application.

Side Dressing. Dry fertilizer is applied as a side dressing after plants are up and growing. Scatter fertilizer on both sides of the row, 6 to 8 inches from the plants. Rake it into the soil and water thoroughly.

Apply side dressing of fertilizer about every four weeks during growing season.

Good nutrient content can be maintained in soil by an annual application of organic fertilizer and an occasional side dressing during the growing season. Organic fertilizer is safer for your garden. It can be homemade or commercially purchased.

Many vegetables and flowers too, can benefit from a side dressing this month. This means to dig some organic fertilizer, compost, or composted manure into the soil around your plants.

Side dressing adds fertilizer to plants during the growing period. Apply the fertilizer on top of the soil at least six inches away from the base of the plant.
Base feeding is especially good for shrubs and roses.

Finished compost can be used as a soil amendment, mulch, side dressing and even a compost tea. It is good for lawns, vegetable gardens, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and even potted plants and house plants.

To keep plants healthy and growing at their best production, apply a side dressing of sulfate of ammonia during the growing season. Weekly doses of liquid seaweed fertilizer will also improve your harvest yield.

A side dressing of a balanced fertilizer or compost tea during the growing season will help produce optimal growth. You may not get many hops the first year but production should increase in subsequent years.

*Fish emulsion is a by-product of processing fish called menhaden. Applied diluted and as a side dressing, it contains nitrogen that plants can readily absorb.

Bonemeal (raises pH), phosphate (crushed limestone).

A layer of mulch on top of the soil will help lock in moisture and prevent the plant from drying out. Apply compost or other fertilizer as a side dressing when the vines start forming.

Work in fertilizer with organic material when preparing the garden. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, onions, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and other high feeding plants require side dressing fertilizer boosts.
