A piece of hardware screen or other material is often used as a sieve to separate finished compost from the larger pieces of material that need to finish composting.

Sieve-tube member - Cells in a chain that form sieve tubes in phloem.

SIEVE - A garden sieve is a frame with a mesh bottom. Mainly used for separating compost, but sometimes used in very stony gardens. Home made ones made out of two by fours, 2' x 2' with a 1/2 inch hardcloth bottom is most handy.

Sometimes wire sieves are too fine for screening still chunky compost. To move things along, without losing your sanity, try screening with a wider mesh. An easy alternative is to use and old plastic milk crate.

Leaf-mold is an excellent soil conditioner. Sieve out the finer material for making potting compost, and use the coarse residue for mulching around any type of plant.
