PLANT DIARY: Corylopsis sinensis
Corylopsis is a genus of 7-10 species of deciduous shrubs and small trees found in woodland and scrub in the E. Himalayas, China, Taiwan, and Japan.

Sinensis/sinense Epithet meaning from China; from Asia generally.

The tropical hibiscus or Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), has the most prized and showy flowers, but it isn't winter hardy, so must be moved indoors for winter protection, or new plants purchased each year.

A large clump of Miscanthus sinensis, which stands next to a wide twig archway covered in hop vine, reaches two metres each year after being cut to ground level every spring.

Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) and Japanese wisteria (W. floribunda) are the most commonly planted species, and they produce flower buds on old wood.

Hardiness: Zones 4 to 8.
Size: Up to 8 feet high and 4 feet wide.
Foliage: Tufts of green.
Flowers: Silver to pale pink-brown, late summer to autumn.

Maiden grass (Miscanthus sinensis) is the most widely grown ornamental grass. With graceful leaves and showy flowers that often feature curling tendrils, it is the definition of elegance.

In our northern climate, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the species most commonly available through nurseries, garden centers and florists.

Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (left) is known as flame grass because of its orange-red fall color. By winter, its plumes turn creamy white.

Chinese wisteria, also called "Wisteria sinensis," is the most popular variety. Before its foliage emerges, Chinese wisteria blooms in one huge display during mid-spring in white or varying shades of purple, depending on the cultivar.

A popular plant sold at box stores and nurseries is the Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa- sinensis).
