Steps, Slopes and Structures: Combining Beauty and Function
Raised beds, steps and other structures must be weight-appropriate, easy to construct and weather-resistent. But that doesn't mean they can't be beautiful.

Coping with Slopes
When buying or building a home on a steeply sloping site it is usually to take advantage of an outstanding view. How to deal with the steep terrain to establish and maintain a garden is generally an after-thought.

Most people who have a lawn on a steep slope or grade know how difficult it is to water.

Slope direction: Which direction the slope should face is not always clear. Southern and southwestern slopes can be hot and dry, and can cause trees to break dormancy too early, which makes them susceptible to damage from late frosts.

Slopes: On steep slopes, shredded mulch is best, and hardwood holds better than softwood. However, hardwood mulch tends to break down faster than softwood and may need to be reapplied sooner.

* Sloped areas also are prone to browning. Water usually runs off the slope before it has had a chance to sink in and the lawn dries out. Aerating the sloped areas helps move water into the soil.

* Slope plant shelves slightly to the outside of the pond so that plants will slide against the wall of the pond instead of into the pond itself as the liner gets slick over time.

Southern Slope
A gentle slope facing south receives solar radiation—heat and light—longer than other sites. And the radiation is more intense. That's why a southern slope is the best location for a garden.

The steep, sloped gravel hill prairie is a dry, exceptionally well-drained area with slightly sandy or gravelly soil. Plants found here are lower to the ground and flower earlier than tallgrass varieties.

Mow across a slope with a push mower, and up/down the slope with a riding mower. While riding uphill lean forward to prevent the front wheels from lifting off the ground (Figure 1).

Roof pitch or slope appears on the design plans as well. Roof pitch is the dimension of rise compared to run, with geometry that appears similar to a right triangle; for example, 8 inches of rise on 12 inches of run is referred to as an 8/12 pitch.

Consider the slope
Flower gardens are easiest to establish on level or slightly sloping ground. Steep slopes pose special problems, especially protecting soil from erosion.

If your garden slopes away or to the house, draw a side elevation using your height measurements.
Include the path of the sun on your plan, so that you can plant shade loving and sun worshiping plants accordingly.

Since berms are sloped, you should also consider the overall temperatures throughout the year. For instance, those facing south or west are warmer, whereas those facing north or east are cooler.

This would include sloping the grade away from building foundations, eliminating or reducing severe slopes and filling low-lying areas.

As the Ivy vine grows, it sets roots into the soil deeply and densely, and creates a network of roots which binds the soil, helping to prevent erosion and slippage on slopes.

Walls are more stable and structurally secure if they slope back or "lay back" into the retained slope. This amount of variance from true vertical is called "cant" or "batter".

TERRACING often involves installing retaining walls to keep soil level along a slope. Major projects require a contractor. But terrace walls less than three feet tall can be built by the gardener.

The higher the retained slope, the more structural stability is required.

Landscaping a Rock Garden on a Slope
If you are building a garden on a slope, fill in behind each stone as you work your way to the top and if possible, try to create relatively deep pockets of soil around larger stones.

The cold frame roof slopes to let in more winter sunlight. You may create a sloped surface by having the back several inches higher than the front of the frame with sloping sides or by placing the frame on a sloped site.

If your site slopes then plant your rows across the slope and not run up and down it. This helps keep your soil from being carried away.

Buffer requirements may vary depending on soil quality, slope, site use and land availability. A permit may be required, depending on the location and construction equipment needed.

Good choices for ground covers include slopes, where the plantings can help prevent erosion of the soil. Many varieties require little water so they'll work well for you in dry areas where your sprinkler system won't reach.

Physical considerations:  soil condition, prevailing wind directions, natural or created windbreaks, and the slope or grade of the land - indicating the need and opportunity for terraces or retaining walls, constructed out of wood, concrete, ...

The natural slope at the edge of the beds will leave a bed about 36 inches wide. Adjust the width as needed. The finished growing bed will include about eight inches of soft prepared soil for plants to grow in.

Using scrap lumber or plywood, build a frame with sides the slope down toward the front; a 6 inch slope is sufficient. Makre sure the front is high enough (about 18 inches) to accommodate your shortest bonsai.

Rock gardens are good choices for sloped landscapes; plants generally utilized in rock gardens are indigenous to mountain regions.

Growing strawberries for one year is easy: nice well drained soil, north facing slope if you are prone to late frosts. Late frost folks: aim for late blooming varieties
that are tolerant of higher humidity, too.

How about a slope or a hazardous spot to fill? Group hardy and attractive roses for a showy "cover-up." Try planting Pink Double Knock Out with double flowers in a cheerful bubble gum hue.

If you have some part of your land or the present existing garden with attractive and natural rock formations and a slope, then that can make it the perfect location for a rock garden.

Using slightly sloping areas helps, and areas that are more sloped may be used if managed properly. Contour the rows to the shape of the slope (plant around the hill). Construct terraces if erosion results even with contoured planting.

We noticed that the land sloped the wrong way, making it impossible for water to flow downstream. We had to increase the height of the larger pond, which took some creattivity.

Maybe it's a steep slope, or a narrow area where it's hard to mow, or an area under a large tree that is too shady to support a conventional lawn. Or maybe you just want to reduce the size of the lawn to save time and effort in mowing.

GRADE: The degree or direction of a slope. Mainly associated with house construction and landscaping.
GRAFT: Process whereby a part taken from one plant is made to unite with and grown upon another part of a plant.

Sub-surface drainage problems occur when the water table is near the surface or water runs down a slope, such as a patio, on to the lawn.

Nearby slopes may cause frost pockets, which will adversely affect your fruit. Wind may also stunt the growth of your fruit tree and the altitude of your garden may be better suited for certain fruits or strains.
