Sludge (or Milorganite®) -- While it has a slight odor, dried sludge is safe to use and mostly odorless. It may be added to the soil or compost pile.

Sludge collected by your pond filter can be used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer for your lawn and garden.

Sludge Processed sewage, high in nitrogen, which is used as fertilizer.
Smut A fungal disease that often has gray or black spores.
Softwood cutting A herbaceous (often green) cutting of young stems.

Sludge (biosolids)
Requires special handling and high temperatures to kill disease organisms and get rid of toxic metals; do not use unless product is sold in compliance with government regulations.

Sewer sludge is a recycled product of municipal sewage treatment plants. Two forms are commonly available: activated and composted. Activated sludge has higher concentrations of nutrients (approximately 6-3-0) than composted sludge.

Wastewater Sludge (Biosolids)
Types of Wastewater Sludge
Sludge, also called biosolids, is a by-product of municipal wastewater treatment.

Fill a compost bin with a good mixture of green and brown materials, not just lots of green stuff such as grass clippings, which will produce a smelly sludge. Go for the largest compost bin you can fit in your garden.

You can buy manure or sewer sludge that has been composted. Depending on the type of manure will determine the amount of nutrients you get. Certain manures burn plants easier also, so be sure they are composted first.

Vacuum the pond bottom if sludge has built up past 2.5 centimetres, but a complete clean-out is not an annual necessity unless you've had problems. Don't empty the pond and refill it with fresh water, as this provides additional nutrients for algae.

If you get to much debris and sludge you may have to completely drain your pond. Too much decaying vegetation will cause major algae as well as lower oxygen levels.
Prune, thin, and reshape any plants as needed.

A sludge pump is dropped down a 150mm-diameter hole filled with water from a hose. Once it has filled up with sand and water, the pump cylinder is lifted to the surface by a rope.

Organic fertilizers are commonly processed from various animal and plant by-products, like poultry feathers, manures and treated sewage sludge.

This is sewage plant sludge from Milwaukee, WI. It is safe and sold as a 6-2-0 fertilizer. When used on turf areas around rhododendron beds at half the normal rate for turf, it deters deer from the area.

MILORGANITE
Milorganite is a type of sewage/sludge fertilizer first produced and marketed in Milwaukee. The fertilizer analysis is 5-2-0 and slightly acidic.

It's often mixed with bedding or sludge and contains nutrients, weed seeds and potential disease organisms. Raw or partially processed manure isn't stable. It can release nutrients at less predictable rates than compost.

TSP cleaners are able to remove grime, smoke, paint and paint remover sludge from walls rather effectively. When combined with bleach, trisodium phosphate is very effective for removing mildew.

Use a 50/50 mix of organic planting mix and potting soil. "You don't want soil with a lot of chemicals or sewer sludge," says Jamie. His preferred mixtures include steer manure, pumice and perlite.

At least twice a week, check your pond for fallen leaves and debris. Deadhead any flowering plants and remove any submerged plants that are dying or dead. Organic debris not only increases the possibility of a clogged pump, it adds sludge to the ...

nitrogen, such as ammonium nitrate, urea ammonium phosphate, or potassium chloride. Rain is likely to wash it quickly past the root zone. Fertilize only when needed and use only 100 percent slow-release nitrogen products, biosolids and sludge- or ...

If you have the lawn just on the surface and spread newspaper and then mulch, the organic matter of the lawn can turn into a nasty sludge (this is because no oxygen will be present) which will effect the growth of anything you grow in it. However....

Never use manures from any animal that eats meat (this includes humans). And never use sewage sludge or milorganite (human waste from sewage treatment plants).

Something merely labeled "compost" could very well be made from toxic sludge (often called biosolids) or just ground up wood chips and nothing else. Play it safe and buy quality organic potting soil.

Another useful product, Pond Saver, is a concentrated blend of beneficial bacteria which quickly biodegrade the organic matter in water that causes clouding, sludge, and foul odors. It is not harmful to fish or plants.

If the tilth of the soil is very heavy or sandy, organic material such as peat moss, compost, sludge or even sawdust should be added.
