Soil Chemistry
Do plants grow best in alkaline or acid soil?
The terms alkaline and acid refer to the pH of your soil. So what exactly does that mean? A little science lesson will be helpful (and I promise not too painful) here.

Soil Conditioners
One of the best things to do for just about all soils is to add things that keep it in good shape. These things are called soil conditioners and include manure, compost, peat moss, and leaves.

Soil Texture: From Sand To Clay
By Sara Williams
Gardeners often have problems with the way their soil "handles." At one extreme is the heavy clay soil, which is sticky when wet and like concrete when dry.

Soil tillage
Tillage is an operation whereby the soil is either cleared from noxious weeds, or prepared for receiving the seeds of plants cultivated by the husbandman. When this operation is neglected, or even partially executed.

Soil improvement is a continual process. It often takes ten or more years to build a productive garden soil.

Soil management is the major gardening task since the soil is the most easily controllable part of the plant's environment. Soil provides the mineral nutrients and water used by plants to manufacture their food supply and structural components.

Soil fertility is hard to measure, but you can let your plants tell you if your soil is at least in a good range. Healthy, lush, pest free plants are happy with their soil fertility.

Soil Testing for Lawn Health
Anyone can purchase a soil pH test kit at most lawn care stores. However, overall quality and pH accuracy varies widely in these products.

Soil Prep and Fertilizers
To maintain an optimum supply for plant growth, you need to use fertilizer. Fertilization is necessary because it supplements naturally occuring, essential mineral elements in the soil.

Soil temperatures need to be below 60 degrees F before planting, but you can prepare the site any time. Select a location with good drainage and light shade at midday.

Healthy soil is the key to healthy plants. There are many soil types around the country, but the two extremes are clay and sand. Clay is horrible and sticky, can become waterlogged and compacted, and when it dries out, sets like stone.

Soil deposits at the mouth of a stream or river, characterized by little or no modification of the original transported material by soil-forming processes.

Soil consists of water, air, humus and mineral particles. The ideal proportion is 20 to 25 percent of air, 20 to 25 percent of water, at least five percent of organic matter (humus) and 45 to 50 percent of mineral particles.

soil preparation and irrigation systems
Drainage
Healthy soils grow healthy plants.

Soil testing and fertilizing
After any amendments to improve aeration and drainage have been incorporated into the bed, have the soil analyzed to determine fertilizer needs and pH.

Soil that has been solarized allows plants to draw on the nutrients in the soil, especially nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium, more readily. Seeds germinate more quickly.

Soil type is generally classified by the size of these inorganic soil particles: sand (large particles), silt (medium-sized particles) or clay (very small particles).

Soil Texture
This hands-on test is a simple way to get an idea if your soil is sand, clay or a loamy mixture.

The soil will settle into layers and you can visually estimate the proportion of sand (bottom layer) to silt (second layer) to clay (the layer on top)

Good soil is the foundation of a healthy lawn. To grow well, your lawn needs soil with good texture, some key nutrients, and the right pH, or acidity/alkalinity balance.

Your soil test is only as good as your sample. The best time to conduct a test is in the fall and spring. Don't mix soils from several different beds.

Potting Soil or Media
The potting soil or media in which a plant grows must be of good quality. It should be porous for root aeration and drainage but also capable of water and nutrient retention.

Obtain a soil sample bag or bags from a Department of Agriculture extension office. (Listed under US Government in the phone book.) It will contain directions and labeling instructions. Alternatively, purchase the bag from a commercial testing lab.

Improving soil in a general sense (with or without a soil test) is a physically demanding yet crucial task in the garden.

Start preparing soil in summer for fall planting of spring-flowering bulbs. For tender summer-flowering bulbs, prepare soil the previous fall or in early spring. Spade or loosen the soil 8 to 12 inches deep.

Step two - Scoop soil into the vial. After the soil is dry and pulverized, you're ready to put a small amount into the vial.

- Echinacea Purple Coneflowers-These plants literally will break up the soil as they grow. They are drought tolerant, sun loving, vibrant and provide food for the Goldfinches, so what's not to like? These perennials are also considered to be herbs.

In this case, green usually indicates neutral soil; yellow or orange indicates acidic soil; and dark green indicates alkaline soil.
Take several measurements in different spots in the garden.

Soil in containers needs to be fairly light but also rich because the plants are closely packed in with roots competing for precious nutrients.

Soil pH is a measurement of one aspect of the soil's chemical composition: the concentration of hydrogen ions (an ion is an electrically charged atom or molecule).

Laboratory soil sample analysis or foliar analysis is the only way to detect the kinds of nematodes associated with a problem and may be necessary to identify the most effective control measures.

SOIL BUILDING
"When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." David Orr
SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC GARDENING starts with soil building. When crops are deprived of basic nutrients they languish.

Soil-less composts are a poor substitute for soil-based kinds when it comes to herb
cultivation. They are relatively short-lived in terms of nutrient levels - just see how ...

Soil Preparation
Poor soil conditions are a leading cause of lawn failure. The only time significant changes in the lawn soil can be made is before the lawn is planted.

Soil found outside stores and releases nutrients, provides plant support, and creates passages for air and water. It contains living things"bacteria, mites, and worms, as well as nonliving substances"small particles of sand and clay.

Soil Requirements
The most important factor in achieving vigorous growth is an acid soil mixture high in organic content. Rhododendrons and azaleas need an acid soil with a pH of 5.0 to 6.0, well mulched with organic material.

Soil Texture: What You Inherit
Soil is composed of air spaces and organic matter, but mostly mineral particles. There are three kinds of soil minerals: sand, silt and clay.

Limestone to raise pH
Aluminum sulfate or sulfur to lower pH
pH (potential Hydrogen) is the measure of the general acidity or alkalinity of a soil.

Soil
The majority of the ferns we grow in our gardens prefer moist, slightly acidic soil in partly shaded conditions that mimic their native woodland habitats.

SOIL STERILIZING
Soil is difficult to sterilize in the garden. Chemicals are not available to the homeowner for use in sterilization.
Clear plastic can be laid over moist soil and kept in place for several months to kill weeds, seeds and insects.

Soil - pH 6.0 - 7.0 rich in organic matter, moist, well-drained. Mulch
Water - average rainfall
Succession - Alfafa, Corn, Tomatoes, Beans & Peas
Pest:
cornborer - look for small hole under tassel. Smash worm by squeezing tassel.

Soil Amenders
By working soil amendments such as compost and manure into the garden and feeding plants with organic fertilizers you will build the soil and replenish spent nutrients.

Soil and Fertilizers: Most garden stores carry a soil mix and fertilizer specifically for African Violets. Use a planter with openings at the bottom to allow good drainage should you overwater them.

Soil pH also benefits with the addition of compost. This is a measure of soil acidity or alkalinity. Finished compost has a neutral pH. For the majority of ornamental plants, nutrients are available to them at a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5.

Soil fumigation before planting is ineffective in controlling Phytophthora root and crown rots because the fumigant never completely eradicates existing inoculum from the soil and Phytophthora spp. are easily reintroduced.

Soil, sun and water requirements
Tomatoes require plenty of sun. As for soil, they will grow in just about anything you throw at them.
