Signs of Soil Fertility
By: Gene Rodriguez, III
Soil is a combination of mineral and organic material that supports the growth of plants. The structure of soil allows water, nutrients and air to reach the roots of plants.

Soil Fertility
The ideal soil for houseplants drains readily and provides airspace for plant roots, yet is nutrient-rich and able to hold moisture. Soils that are low in fertility can lead to plant stress and challenges.

To improve soil fertility, fertilize at planting time. Each year in spring when plants are growing, spread an inch of compost, or feed with a low-nitrogen bulb fertilizer according to package directions.

Enhance your soil fertility with Compost
Composting has been going on since the beginning of time. Each year, Mother Nature produces foliage in the spring.

Cow manure is relatively poor in nutrients but it will slightly improve soil fertility. Sheep and rabbit manure make superb mulch and are so mild-acting that they can be used without ageing.

Does companion planting improve soil fertility?
Companion planting can absolutely improve soil fertility. Many companion plants are used for their ability to trap nitrogen.

Sylvie Brouder, associate professor of plant nutrition and soil fertility at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., explained why the tests showed such different results.

Your soil fertility can be greatly affected by naturally occurring organisms or the absence of them. We all know that worms are good for soil fertility but so are other creatures like centipedes, ground beetles and nematodes.

There it is assured full sun, perfect drainage, minimal soil fertility and nocturnal air movement with moist Pacific fog. This bushy poppy thrives in fast-draining sandy or gravely soil.

Get a soil test—balanced soil fertility and a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 may prevent root rot. Resist overcrowding your plants (I know it's hard when you have a small space and love peas), because crowded plants are less vigorous.

Organic mulches improve soil fertility and build good tilth. Some examples are tree leaves, garden compost, grass clippings, chipped wood or bark, pine needles, seed or nut hulls, aged manure, and even seaweed.

-- that is grown and then incorporated into the soil to increase soil fertility or organic matter content. Usually turned over into the soil a few weeks before new planting begins.

The clusters of white flowers, borne on two- or three-foot stalks depending on soil fertility and moisture, combine well with a variety of perennials or, for that matter, annuals.

Maintain adequate but not excessive soil fertility. A spray program using a recommended fungicide beginning at fruit set and continuing on a 7-14 day schedule should be maintained where early blight problems are anticipated.

Maintenance
Ferns have few diseases or pests, though slugs and snails can sometimes appear. Apply slow-release organic fertilizers in early summer if soil fertility is low. Avoid fast-release nitrogen fertilizers.

The decomposition process releases nutrients and minerals into the soils home of our plants making them available for the plants or bushes use. Soil fertility depends on pH.
