To test your soil, it is a good idea to dig out samples from several places to see what the soil is like. Soil that hasn't been worked is seldom ready for new plantings.
Soil pH is a determining factor when deciding what to plant. For failing to foot the cost of a $10 or $15 soil test, many have paid later.

Even when planted in an acidic soilless mixture in containers, alkaline elements found in some water sources will damage the plants by neutralizing the soil pH.
It is often multi-trunked, densely branched, and twiggy. Prefers full sun and well-drained soils but will tolerate poor soils, various soil pHs, compacted soils, drought, heat and winter salt spray. Hardy to zone 3.
