Tender bulbs, such as caladiums, should be planted only when soil temperatures are warm enough to induce sprouting - cold spring soil can cause the bulbs to rot instead of sprout.

They will be sweet and not bitter if the soil is not allowed to dry out. Also mulching with straw or dried grass clippings around your lettuce plants is very helpful in keeping the moisture in and the soil temperatures cool.

Soil Temperature Gardening
Soil temperature gardening involves the placement of thin, clear plastic over the soil, with its edges buried within an outer trench. Large rolls of plastic can be obtained at most home and garden centers.

Thermic soil temperature- The mean annual soil temperature is 15° C (59° F) or higher but lower than 22° C (72° C), and the difference between mean summer and mean winter soil temperature is more than 5° C (9° F) at a depth of 50 cm (20 in).

Soil temperature-- Nutrient uptake is faster in warmer soils than in cold soils.
Plant condition-- Plants under stress will be less able to take up nutrients, generally due to a reduced or damaged root system.

Soil temperature may be too high for cool-season crops like peas, cabbages, spinach and lettuce.

While soil temperatures are still warm, fertilize leafy greens like spinach, corn salad & sorrel so that they have enough nutrients to take them through the fall.

Maintain constant soil temperature. Do you ever find your plants uprooted or dislodged after a hard winter? Changes in soil temperatures from alternate freezing and thawing cause plants to be heaved from the ground.

Mulches help cool soil temperatures during the growing season, and you can also depend on mulch to reduce the negative impact of cold winter weather on dormant plants.

Plant peas when the soil temperature is at least 45 degrees and dry enough to till without clumping. Early-season peas need a winter covering to protect them from killing frost (although most are tough enough to tolerate moderate freezes).

Dahlia tubers should not be planted until all danger of frost has passed, and the soil temperature reaches 58°-60° F.

Also, soil temperatures remain favorable for root growth. (Roots continue to grow until soil temperatures drop below 40 degrees F.) Another plus for fall planting: Most plants have finished with flowering and/or fruiting, ...

Growing quickly with warm air and soil temperatures and long day length, summer-flowering annuals and summer bulbs weave together the mixed border.

Plant by soil temperature rather than air temperature. Don't plant seedlings or seeds below 45-degree soil temperature. Hail and very strong winds cause desiccation of plant tissues.

Sweet potato growth slows when soil temperature falls below 18°C . When the vines turn black after the first frost, harvest your potatoes immediately. Dig them out carefully because the skins are susceptible to bruises and cuts.

The germination of grass seed is triggered by proper soil temperature. Warm season grass seed will germinate with minimum soil temperatures of 55 to 65 degrees.

It will help keep moisture from evaporating, regulate the soil temperature, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. By providing an insulating blanket, microbes and earthworms will thrive.

"Although the top of the plant may have lost its leaves, the roots can continue to grow until the soil temperature approaches freezing, which is much later than when the air temperature approaches freezing," says Marvin Pritts, ...

Currants do best in cool soil temperatures with full sun. They're winter hardy, growing in USDA Hardiness zones three to five. Native species are found in northern parts of North America, and will even grow at elevations up to 10,000 feet.

The real key to success was in the soil temperature at a depth of six inches. When the soil temperature falls below 40 degrees F, root growth comes to a screeching halt.

Peas should be planted when soil temperatures reach forty degrees. Soil should be moist (not soaked), rich in organic matter, phosphorus and potash. They prefer a more basic, rather than acidic, soil.

This varies, but generally seeds like a soil temperature of around 78 degrees F. Check your seed packets or any handy reference material for the ideal temperature range (preferably before you plant to avoid making neighbors of incompatible plants).

As the thermometer dips lower, soil temperatures will fall too low. An over-wintering pansy should be planted in soil temperatures between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit for the best start. Once established, the pansy may wilt and appear to die.

Warm soil temperatures often give you faster germination and growth, than the cooler soil temperatures in early spring.

If your growing season is long enough, sow seeds directly in the garden when the soil temperature reaches about 60 degrees F. Plant 3-6 seeds in a hill, or slightly raised mound.

High soil temperatures can stress your plants and burn up organic matter. In hot climates, most crops will be happier and more productive with a soil-cooling mulch such as shredded leaves or straw.

Whether you are sowing vegetables or early hardy annuals, it is a wise precaution not to sow anything until the soil temperature has remained above 7°C (45°F) for a week.

It is possible to buy anti-slug nematodes which, once the soil temperature is above 10 degrees Centigrade, will parasitise the local slug population. Nematodes are an expensive solution to be sure.

Some "cold-blooded" veggies, like lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and spinach, survive better in the cool spring when soil temperatures are below 65 degrees F. If you want to be safe, plant everything once temperatures pass 65 degrees F.

Since plants grow at different rates and prefer different soil temperatures, plan your garden to accomadate this information.

Plant geraniums in the spring, but be sure all danger of frost has passed, as they won't germinate or bloom until the soil temperature is above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Geraniums are usually propagated through cuttings taken from older geranium plants.

After several days of sunshine, soil temperatures rise to as high as 140 degrees at the surface and over 100 degrees as far down as 18 inches -- hot enough and far enough down into the soil to sterilize it.

The ideal soil temperature is 13°C as in colder soil bulbs will not start to grow and may rot. Aim to plant dry bulbs directly after purchase.
