Solitary bees
Solitary bees are very common in Colorado but seldom noticed. Ninety percent of bee species are solitary types including leafcutter, digger, sweat and carpenter bees.

Solitary bees come in all sizes. Bumblebees, including all-black carpenter bees, are probably the most recognizable. Many others, such as mason and leafcutter bees, are tiny and go about their work largely unnoticed.

Solitary bees create nests in hollow reeds or pithy stems, natural or man-made cavities, or, most commonly, in tunnels they dig in the ground. They may create simple holes or extensive burrows or mounds.
