From the photo you sent us the plant looks like a flax plant, the large stalk that is growing from the centre is a flower spike. These can grow quite large.

Spike small lawns with a garden fork, but use a wheeled aerator or some other kind of mechanical spiker on larger areas. The best ones remove a core of soil.

I love the long spikes of coral-red flowers on this salvia, particularly since they appear continuously from July through frost. The loose, bushy plant is native to high elevations in the Mexican Sierra Madre.
