Yucca Elephantipes - Spineless Yucca
Yucca elephantipes is the quintessential architectural plant. (some spell in Yukka, but it is Yucca) The leaves are hard and spear like (without spines) and point upward.

Spines can also be several modified structures, like leaves (Cactaceae), stipules (some Leguminosae and Euphorbias), bracts (I can´t think of any now...) or vascularized projections from the stem (Smilax and Dioscorea).

Spined Soldier Bugs
These bugs eat the Larvae of Colorado Potato Beetles, Sawflies, Cabbage Loopers and Tent Caterpillars.
Tachinid Flies
These flies eat Caterpillars, Armyworms, Cornborers, Cutworms and Stinkbugs.

Spine A modified very sharp leaf, similar to thorn and prickle; sharp outgrowths of the twig, sometimes but not always paired at the nodes.

You can expect two or three store-sized artichokes per plant, which after cutting will produce new buds that are progressively smaller.

Add a spine-chilling element to the October landscape with a carefully placed gargoyle or similar piece of garden art (figure A). Tuck them in a niche or around a corner to heighten visitors' surprise.

Thorns and spines exemplify one type of plant defence mechanism. The Prickly Cycad Encephalartos altensteinii is an ancient plant which uses a number of techniques. Its leaves are produced and hardened in one flush so that they are less palatable.

Sturdy, spiky spines make fooling with a cactus daunting - and sometimes dangerous. Pricklypears (Opuntia) have fine bristles, known as glochids, that fly off the plant with the merest disturbance.

The treacherous spines account for the common name "crown-of-thorns.' It is unlikely, however, that it was really used in the crucifixion of Christ, because it is native to the island of Madagascar, now called the Malagasy Republic.

Move your whole body and not just your spine.
Fallen leaves make exceptional material for compost or mulch. If you have the choice, compost them or spread them on the area that will become next year's garden.

Bend open one of the magazine far enough to break the spine and make it more flexible. Start with the cover page and take hold of the top right corner. Fold the corner down so that it lines up with the magazine spine.

However, as temperatures warm in the early spring, spurweed initiates a period of rapid growth and begins to form spine-tipped burs. The sharp-tipped spiny burs of this weed can cause minor irritation to the skin.

Adult MPB are small (3 mm; 0.1 in) and green or brown with black spines and spots on their legs. They do not damage the fruit but are predaceous. They may be found in fruit trees beginning in late June.

Leaves are dark green or variegated, and spineless or covered in spines. Thick, dense foliage provides great shelter and nesting sites for birds. Grow in partial shade in hot, dry areas. English holly is not well suited to the Deep South.

It is the "shaggy dog" of lace cacti with its long (but friendly) brownish or pinkish spines arranged in neat, comb-like rows. Huge (up to 5" across), dark pink flowers open over a 2-3 week period in late spring.

The stiff, gray-green leaves of this pineapple relative are edged with spines and form an upright vase or urn shape. Silver vase plant sends up a large cluster of long-lasting pink bracts that bear short-lived purple flowers.

The tree has very long spines and is quite hardy so it is sometimes used as a hedge. It can also be pruned and the Japanese have sometimes it as stock for grafting other citrus plants.

The "rule of thumb" is that if you can easily brush off the tiny spines on the cucumber fruit, it is ripe and ready to be picked. At this stage, the seeds are not large and the taste has not become bitter.

Hind wing cover - Ips has a pronounced cavity with 3-6 pairs of spines; MPB has a gradually curved wing.
Generations per year - Ips 2 to 4 per year, March through October; MPB one per year from approximately mid-July to early September.

Make sure to clip the spines off of the leaves before putting them in a salad. The roots can also be cooked and eaten too.

Place a silvery agave in bright light (and away from kids and pets that may touch the sharp spines). After that, you don't have to do much other than admire it. More picks: silver jade plant and Hawthoria.

This cucumber relative is also known as snake melon. Long, slender light green fruits are spineless, and almost always curved unless grown on a trellis and harvested when 12 nches long. Somewhat sweet, with a mild, slightly citrusy flavor.

AREOLE -- A small well-defined area, usually hairy and cushion-like, found on the stem of cacti. From them arise spinesorglochids.

The Otaheite orange is not actually an orange but is a dwarf, spineless variant resulting from a cross between a lemon and a tangerine. Its botanical name is Citrus limonia 'Otaheite,' once known as Citrus taitensis.

Use gloves or a "potholder" strip of folded newspaper to protect your hands from spines.

For example, cactus is the common name for any plant with succulent leaves and spines. But plants have evolved this characteristic several times throughout history and there are several plant families with cactus plants within them.

Stipule- A small structure or appendage found at the base of some leaf petioles, usually present in pairs. They are morphologically variable and appear as scales, spines, glands, or leaflike structures.

Cotton jersey is good for all around work, while thick leather gloves are good for wet work or work around plants with thorns or spines. For really wet work, including handling chemicals, wear rubber or plastic gloves with cotton liners.
