Lawn spreaders come in two types: drop and centrifugal (also known as broadcast).

Larger spreaders are push-behind devices similar to a lawnmower. As you push a fertilizer spreader, the wheels turn a mixer that keeps the material in the spreader loose.

If the spreader does become dirty or muddy, wash it down with a hose and then wipe up the excess moisture. Let the spreader dry thoroughly before the next use.

Unless you've decided to apply your lawn fertilizer by hand — usually a bad idea — you're going to need fertilizer equipment.

Drop spreaders are metal or plastic containers on two-wheeled carts with a mechanism for dispensing seed and fertilizer automatically as you walk behind and push it.

Use a spreader to apply granular herbicides. If you don't own one, visit your local garden center.

Hand-held spreaders provide an even distribution of seeds and are a good choice if the area to be seeded is too large for broadcasting by hand.

Occasionally applying a thin layer of top-dressing to your lawn keeps it looking its best.

Centrifugal spreaders cover a wider area faster with fewer missed areas than drop spreaders. But a centrifugal spreader may not apply the herbicide evenly across the swath. The outer edges of the pattern will probably receive less herbicide.

Fill a drop spreader with lime. Lime will neutralize the acidic value in the soil and provide some odor reduction. Walk slowly to spread a 1/8-inch layer of lime over the manure. Rake the manure and lime to ensure even distribution over the garden.

Avoid rampant spreaders Fast-growing groundcovers are tempting, but you may be distressed to see them overtaking the natural ecosystem. Instead, concentrate on plants that sit tight in their own space.

Use hand-held spreaders for applying granular fertilizer to small or medium-sized gardens. With this technique, you can appy fertilizer to only the plants that need it.

Avoid aggressive spreaders that will compete with neighboring plants and consider dwarf varieties.

5. Favor Drought Tolerant Plants ...

This long-blooming spreader re-seeds well. Its erect stems grow 10 to 15 inches tall, with 1-inch-wide, trumpet-shaped lilac to lavender-blue flowers. In its native range, it is found in prairies, open woods, and rocky banks. Grow in dry, acid soil.

The best and most even results are usually achieved using a 'whirlybird' hand crank operated seed spreader. Sow ¼ of your seed (at ¼ the recommended rate) to the entire lawn area.

When spreading your granular fertiliser it can be done by hand or by using a fertiliser spreader. When spreading by hand use gloves and broadcast the fertiliser in sweaping movements, the trick is not to put too much in one spot.

Use either a drop spreader or a spinner spreader. Uniform coverage is the key as lime is very insoluble and essentially stays where it is put. Skipped areas won't receive the lime needed to neutralize acidity.

pensylvanica is a modest spreader, sending up suckers, or underground shoots, a few feet away from the base of the parent plant. Pull them up. rather than cutting them, any time of year if you want to prevent the plant from spreading.

On larger lawns, a wheeled fertiliser spreader is more convenient. How much product is dispensed depends on your walking speed and the machine's settings. Settings are usually approximate, so calibrate them yourself.

Lawn fertilizers are usually granular and are distributed with drop spreaders. The user pushers the spreader across the yard as the fertilizer drops out the bottom. Settings on the spreader tell the user how thickly to drop the fertilizer.

Bamboo has an unfortunate reputation as a voracious spreader, so many gardeners ignore its potential as an elegant, evergreen plant. Understanding how bamboo grows is the best way to choose one that meets your needs.

It is best to use low-soluble slow-release fertilisers on gardens, applying with a fertiliser spreader to keep the amount used to a minimum.

The actual width of a plant will vary depending on soils, geographical location and the age of the plant. Be careful about locating slow-growers very close to rapid spreaders. The former may all but disappear by the end of the first growing season.
