Sprinkler systems are a wonderful tool for successful gardening, especially in hot, Arkansas summers. But just because you have one, doesn't mean you can ignore it. Older systems may need some upgrading.

A sprinkler system has four main components: valves, pipes, sprinklers and an automatic timer control. The valves regulate how much water flows through the pipes to the sprinklers.

Your garden irrigation system can be a simple as a sprinkler or a series of complex hose connections. Your choice will depend on your plant or flower requirements, and the size of your garden.

Movable sprinkler systems are also quite useful and can increase growth substantially. They come in a number of forms from the standard, stand alone sprinkler which is connected to the hose.

Sprinklers are essentially the opposite of soaker hoses. While useful for establishing lawns, sprinklers may be a water-wasteful choice for planting beds.

Sprinkler attachments for your hose produce artificial rainfall and are the easiest way to water a large area. Overhead sprinkling is beneficial to lawns and most plants and also rinses dust and discourages certain pests, including spider mites.

Sprinklers are a convenient option, particularly for lawns, but there is a risk that they can be forgotten and left to run for hours, which of course leads to massive water waste.

Lawn sprinklers or soaker hoses are great, because they add water to the garden very slowly for a nice, deep soaking. And best of all, you can set the sprinkler and go have a lemonade while the garden gets watered.
The Rules of Watering (I'm Thirsty) ...

Overhead sprinklers are often frowned upon, with exception to lawns, as these also lose more water to evaporation. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation is always better, going straight to the roots while keeping foliage dry.

Look for sprinklers that keep water close to the ground rather than sending a fine mist or spray high into the air. This will help reduce evaporation as well as keep the water on the lawn.

Automatic sprinkler systems are great when they work properly, but they can be a real pain when they don't.

Check your sprinkler system. After danger of frost is past, turn it on, and observe where the water goes. Adjust sprinkler heads to point water where it is needed. In some cases, a different type of head may be in order.

Instead of sprinklers and spray wands, water gently at the soil level, near the base of the plant. Or, better yet, use drip irrigation.

A hose-end sprinkler is often sufficient for applying water to small areas of ground cover. But for large areas or sloping sites that may be subject to erosion, you'll find it more efficient to install a permanent watering system.

Whether by sprinkler system or garden hose, watering is a must for keeping landscapes in tiptop shape.

Use a fine sprinkler head, to keep from dislodging the seed or causing runoff.
12. Keep the seedbed moist.

Turn off the sprinkler and measure the amount of water in each bucket for a clear indication of the maximum, minimum, and relative amounts of water reaching each area within the distribution pattern. Use this information to optimize irrigation.

Check sprinkler systems and timing devices regularly, to be sure they operate properly.

Watering can be accomplished by a variety of methods: with a sprinkler, a soaker hose, by using a watering can, or by collecting water in a container.

Or, if economically feasible, consider installing sprinklers. The ease of use will far outweigh the cost.
Think perennials, shrubs and trees instead of annuals.

Sprinklers cover large areas but use large amounts of water. Some spots get more than others. The wind can cause bad distribution and rapid evaporation. Sprinklers that oscillate are best used for yards and large flower beds.

Lawns are best watered by overhead sprinklers. The deeper the wetting, the deeper the roots will grow. Deep-rooted grass plants are much healthier and better able to withstand drought stress.

Finally in the water category, we have the sprinkler. SO many types; I bought one with a dialing head (it worked on the wand) and I hate it. Leaks like a sieve.

Long before hoses, spray nozzles, and sprinklers became standard weapons in the gardener's aqua arsenal, watering cans were the tool of choice.

To find out how much time that requires using a sprinkler, take three plastic gallon milk bottles and cut off the top necks. Draw a line on each bottle one inch up from the bottom with a waterproof marker.

Depending on the size of the lawn you may be able to water it using a hand-held sprinkler but for most people a sprinkler system is essential.

Much water is wasted when lawn sprinklers are left on during the day. The best times to water are early evening or early morning when evaporation is at a minimum.

In the past, helping plants survive drought meant turning on the sprinkler day after scorching day. But now there's a more water efficient way of gardening that saves on water and on time called xeriscaping.

Then when I'm out working in the garden I set a small sprinkler on top of the pile and turn it on very low, so a small spray of water runs on the material.

Do not use overhead sprinklers, as the water gets caught inside the vegetable's head and can make it rot. As a general gardening rule, overhead sprinklers are not the best irrigation choice for any plant.

Other uses: use to check your sprinkler watering (remove only the tops, then set several at intervals on your lawn, turning off the water when the water level reaches 1 inch).

Water the seeds with a watering can or sprinkler to avoid displacing them, to moisten the top 1 inch of soil. Water the seeds in this manner every three to four days until they sprout.

You can use sprinklers or hand water. But a drip hose makes the raised bed more maintenance free and efficient. Add it at or just below the soil level . Make sure to work it in a pattern that will evenly cover the entire area in the raised bed.

1. Sprinkling with water. It takes more cold energy for water to freeze. Maintaining a sprinkler running in the early spring may limit cold injury to strawberry flowers and tender transplants. Water in the fall can also limit cold injury.

The best way to water is deeply. Use a hose to water rather than a sprinkler system. However do not over-water. Watering every day can be just as destructive as allowing the plants to dry out.

Dissolve/dilute the weedkiller according to instructions on the packaging and apply weeds using a fine rose (sprinkler head) on a watering can which you only use for weedkiller.
