Look for sprinklers that keep water close to the ground rather than sending a fine mist or spray high into the air. This will help reduce evaporation as well as keep the water on the lawn.

Check sprinkler systems and timing devices regularly, to be sure they operate properly.

Buy a lawn sprinkler, a garden hose, an automatic water timer, and an inexpensive rain gauge. You can get these at most hardware stores or garden centers.

I've been using a sprinkler to water my roses, but my neighbor says drip irrigation is better. Is this true? The problem with overhead watering is that it can spread diseases, such as blackspot and powdery mildew.

The unit has a motion detector and when it's "eye" sees the target animal it will activate the sprinkler head to fire. The sprinkler will then release a three second blast of water which skunk do not like.

Sprinklers cover large areas but use large amounts of water. Some spots get more than others. The wind can cause bad distribution and rapid evaporation. Sprinklers that oscillate are best used for yards and large flower beds.

Lawns are best watered by overhead sprinklers. The deeper the wetting, the deeper the roots will grow. Deep-rooted grass plants are much healthier and better able to withstand drought stress.

Finally in the water category, we have the sprinkler. SO many types; I bought one with a dialing head (it worked on the wand) and I hate it. Leaks like a sieve.

If you have an area too large to cover physically, but with a sprinkler available, run the sprinkler continuously throughout the freezing temperatures until the ice melts off the plants naturally. This method, however, is somewhat tricky.

Turf lawns are best watered by sprinklers or subsurface irrigation. Trees, shrubs, flowers and groundcovers can be watered efficiently with low-volume drip emitters, sprayers, and bubblers, and micro-emitters use water in moderation, ...

Irrigation systems should be checked to ensure that there are no leaks and that sprinklers point to where they are required.

A simple way to do this is to run the sprinkler and catch water in containers at various points under the sprinkler pattern. Keep track of the time it takes to collect about an inch of water in all of the containers.

Never leave sprinklers on - its just not doing any good at all - a gentle spray with a hose as you walk around works best - particularly if you do two circuits, one to moisten the top soil, ...
