Sprouting seeds on your kitchen counter takes only minutes a day, and the reward is a steady supply of fresh, crunchy shoots.

Sprouting your own seed is a lot of fun. As well as being an enjoyable pastime, sprouts yield probably the highest level of nutrient by weight of any vegetable.

Sprouting bean seeds is a very simple process, requiring only a few key ingredients. The method I'm using here involves sprouting them in a canning jar. It's so simple, it's primitive - but it works.

Sprouts will keep for about a week in the refrigerator if you rinse them once every day or two. Be sure to keep the sprouts from freezing as they are frost sensitive.

The sprouts should be cooked in boiling salted water until just tender and then thoroughly drained. Allow about 6 sprouts per person.

Soybean sprout soil must be loose and loamy, meaning it is rich in minerals. A clay soil does not work well for soybean sprouts because it retains too much water and hardens when dry, preventing soybean seedlings from sprouting.

Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stem to the top as they reach about 1" in diameter. Do not leave sprouts on the plant for too long as they become tough and lose flavor.

Brussels sprout plants take up a fair amount of space, but the reward is a bountiful harvest of tasty sprouts.

To start sprouting your seeds, just soak them in clean tap water for a few hours. (If you prefer, feel free to use filtered or distilled water.) The seeds will swell, signaling the start of the germination process.

Brussels Sprouts, as a member of the cabbage family, have the same basic garden growing requirements as cabbage. The small cabbage-like heads normally measure about 2' in diameter and grow from a tall central/main stem.

Controlling Sucker Sprouts From Roots and Stumps
After cutting down a tree, sucker sprouts may keep coming up from the roots and from the stump. How can these be controlled?

They will sprout during the warm fall days. This is normal. The winter will not harm the shoots. It is also normal for the sprouts to experience a slight browning on the tips.
Water through the fall/winter/spring season as needed.

To begin your herb garden, you'll need to choose seeds. Mint, parsley, oregano, rosemary and thyme are good choices for the novice gardener. Begin by filling the notches in an egg carton with high-quality potting soil.

Gladioli will flower earlier if sprouted before planting. Place single layers of corms in trays and place in full light in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Maintain a temperature of around 10°C (50°F).

Whip A long scion used for tongue and groove grafting.
Whorled Arranged around a central point; leaves not alternate nor opposite.

water sprout A vigorous shoot originating above ground on a plant's trunk, older wood, or bud union. Usually breaks from a latent bud. Often the result of heavy pruning.

Any container with drainage holes can be used to hold seedlings, but I prefer the 2-inch square plastic pots. They are perfect and pack neatly in trays.

Flax are grown from seeds. Flax seeds can be directly seeded into your flower garden, or seeded indoors for transplanting later.

Keep the soil moist like a wrung-out sponge but not soaking wet. To avoid over-watering, dunk out any water that is still in the drip tray within an hour of watering.

After sprouting, grow seedlings in a sunny, 60°F (16°C) place (preferably a greenhouse or under grow lights).

Seeds sprout and plants grow at different rates, so timing is very important. Some seeds, such as celery and leeks, should be started 12 weeks before they are transplanted into the garden.

Potatoes sprout from the eyes, so it's a good idea to have one or two eyes for each potato section you want. A small potato may be the right size to plant whole; you may want to cut larger potatoes to increase your crop.

Once a weed has sprouted, you have a few ways of dealing with it. The sooner you catch it, the easier it will be to remove. Tender, young seedlings, especially annuals, can be removed quickly and efficiently with simple hoeing.

GIBBERELLIN - A hormone used in plant production. Often used in Camellia blooms and in increasing the size of fruits.

Another layer is laid over the top so that the seed is surrounded by moisture, and the whole pad kept moist until the seeds start to sprout, when they are said to have 'chitted'.

From October well into the following year, winter and spring cabbage, Brussels sprouts, early and late varieties of broccoli, autumn and winter cauliflower, kale, kohl rabi, swede and turnips are all ready.

Wysteria prefers moist ground and sprouts well after being pruned. In fact wisteria needs to be pruned to encourage the best blooms.

Blossoms, young fruits, small twigs, leaves and water sprouts are susceptible to infection. Blossoms and leaves wilt suddenly, turn dark brown to black, shrivel, and die, but usually remain attached to the plant.

During the growing season, mulching will also help add nutrients to the soil while preventing weeds from sprouting. In colder climates, mulching during the cold season should be considered after the ground has frozen.

If you don't wait until temperatures drop, your seeds will sprout too soon and won't make it through the winter. Don't forget to label all containers with waterproof markers if you don't like surprises.

Overwintered OBLR larvae (spring brood) first feed on water sprouts and then move throughout the tree. Those feeding on developing flower buds do so before bloom and continue to consume floral parts throughout the blossom period.

For the potting mixture, I use equal parts of a good quality potting soil and vermiculite that makes the soil light enough so that the seeds will not have difficulty sprouting and growing.

Areas where trees have been destroyed must be kept free of citrus sprouts and seedlings. Movement of citrus fruit budwood and other plant parts is prohibited from property on or adjacent to sites where infected plants are located.

Digging the soil brings weed seeds to the surface -- they'll sprout wherever there is bare soil when they're exposed to sun and moisture.

If the terminal bud begins to sprout, (which often happens when we have a warm spell in the winter), a following hard freeze can kill the bud.

The potatoes are then stored up for winter and spring use; and as it is of importance to keep them as long through summer as possible, every endeavor ought to be made to preserve them from frost, and from sprouting in the spring months.
