Squash Bug Identification & Damage
Squash bug identification is relatively easy to recognize. The adult bugs are approximately 5/8 inches long, have wings, and are brownish-black in color with some gray mottling.

 


Squash bugs overwinter as unmated adults under plant debris or other suitable shelter. They emerge in late April or early May, search for suitable hosts, and mate.

Squash bug fast facts
Adult squash bugs are about 5/8'' long and 1/4'' wide. They are grey or black and have orange and brown stripes on the edges of their abdomen.
Squash bugs' preferred food is yellow crookneck or yellow straight-neck squash.

Squash bugs
Squash bugs are another southern insect that is now common north of I-70. They feed on squash (winter types preferred over summer), pumpkin and also can be found occasionally on gourds and melons.

Squash bugs lay masses of yellow-orange eggs on the undersides of leaves. Encourage tachinid flies, a natural predator, or try companion planting of radishes, nasturtiums or marigolds to repel the pests.

Squash bugs are another common pest that can be eradicated using this method. Aside from bacterial wilt, powdery mildew is the second most common disease of cucumber vines.
