I have planted zucchini. The plants looked healthy but now the leaves are suddenly starting to wilt in the sun.
Squash Vine Borer is also a major problem. This insect pest bores into the vine, usually near the tap root. Left unchecked, it eats right through the vine. Once it gets inside, the only way to kill it is to surgically remove it.
Squash vine borer larvae tunnel into watermelon vines, chewing inner tissue near the base and filling the stem with moist, slimy castings. The attacked vines wilt suddenly and girdled vines rot and die.
Be on the lookout for squash vine borers--fat, wrinkled, white caterpillars that tunnel into the squash stem, causing the vine to wilt and die. Slit open the vines, pry out the borer and kill it.
Frass is a sawdust-like substance created by boring insects such as Peach Tree Borers and Squash Vine Borers. The frass is a mixture of plant material and insect waste.
By late June, gardeners will need to spray for squash vine borers twice, one week apart. Ferretti advises asking local garden centers for appropriate pesticides.
