Stipules

stipules -- Paired appendages found at the base of the leaves of many flowering plants.

Stipules Small leaf-like organs occurring in pairs on either side of the leaves; occasionally each one extends half way around the twig, respectively.

stipules A pair of appendages found on many leaves where the petiole meets the stem.

Adnate - stipules which adhere to the sides of the petiole, as in Trifolium spp. (clover) and Rosa spp. (rose).

Used in reference to leaf margins, stipules or bracts that are cut or slashed.
Incurved
Bent or curved inward, eg, the petals of a chrysanthemum.

Spines can also be several modified structures, like leaves (Cactaceae), stipules (some Leguminosae and Euphorbias), bracts (I can´t think of any now...) or vascularized projections from the stem (Smilax and Dioscorea).

5cm to 10cm long (3in to 4in) by making a straight cut just below a leaf joint.
It's important to remove all the lower leaves and the stipules (small leaf-like structures at the base of each leaf stalk) from the stem.
