STRAIN -- A selection of a variety, cultivar or species which is raised from seed.

Strain - Another classification that refers to plants, usually annuals, that have similar growth characteristics but don't necessarily look alike.
Stress - Any factor that potentally hinders an organisms development and life cycle.

Strain A race within a species reproduced by seed; many are now cultivars.
Stratification A temperature treatment of seed used to break dormancy.
Stratified Arranged in horizontal layers.

stratification The exposure of seeds to moisture or low temperature to overcome dormancy.

Strain through an un-bleached muslin cloth or a fine wire strainer. Discard sediment. Re-strain or filter until clear. Bottle and cap as desired. The liqueur may be used in cooking at this point, but let it age two months or longer before drinking.

Strain out any fresh herbs. Dried herbs can remain in the oil, but the oil will stay fresh a bit longer if these too are strained.
Oils should be used within 2 months, maximum. Straining out the herbs and refrigerating will help the oil last longer.

PRICKLY PEAR
This plant bears delicious fruit in the south and can be found in sandy, dry and rocky soils. It looks like a cactus and the surface is covered with tufts of red brown tiny barbed bristles.

Modern strains of polyanthus and primroses make admirable pot plants for indoor flowering. When planting out young plants grown for the garden, pot a few strong specimens into 8cm pots of soilless potting compost.

The Sunshine Strain of hellebores was developed by Barry and his friends. Ask for these hybrids at your local quality garden center. They are easy to grow, and relatively pest- and disease-free.
