Color-streaked fountaingrass
'Fireworks' variegated fountaingrass (Pennisetum setaceum) from Proven Winners is a showy grass (24-30 inches high) with green, white and pink stripes.
It has lovely streaked bark with textural lumps on its twisted trunk and branches, and comes into its own at this time of year. It is a tree that gets better with age.
These pint-sized songbirds with streaked breasts and rufous caps are among the first migrants to arrive at my Shelter Island, New York garden.

If the leaves appear streaky, or if flowers fail to open or are misshapen or streaked and discolored, the problem is probably thrips. Thrips are tiny insects that overwinter on stored corms.
This streaked "sport" is believed to be caused by undernourishment. The variegation results from such a minimum of nutrients that it is difficult to produce the desired coloration.
There are also many bicolor, blended and streaked varieties.
Light needs: Full sun.
Growing Advice: Plant firm bulbs 5 to 6 inches deep with the pointed ends facing up. Place bulbs 6 inches apart, cover and water well.
Most varieties are green, but you'll also find purple, red, yellow and streaked varieties. Green beans are several inches long and either round or flattened in shape. They are picked young and tender, before the seeds inside have fully developed.
The exquisite blooms - in lavender, purple, white or streaked - are wonderful for creating carpets in the lawn or patches of colour under the deciduous trees.

I. nil 'Flying Saucers'. Unusual white cups streaked with sky blue; 'Scarlett O'Hara' has crimson flowers and was an All-America Selections winner in 1939.
'Coffee Cups' has glossy purplish-black streaked leaves that are cupped. The leaves fill with water after a heavy downpour. It has purplish-black leaf veins and stems, much like C.
Leaves may be speckled, streaked, spotted or stunted. Flowers may fail to open normally, appearing twisted, discolored, or dried up.
Pineapple Tomato

Appearance Grows to a maximum of 20cm if conditions are right but usually to about 15 cm. The leaves look a bit like tiny nettles and the flowers are white streaked with yellow and violet.
