Gardening Australia gets many letters asking how to strike and plant grapevines. It's as simple as taking cuttings and putting them in the ground.

 


Striking
A technical term, strictly meaning to encourage roots, but generally used for the whole process of taking cuttings.

A striking variant of the more common wood anemone, this creeping perennial bears white flowers over a ruff of closely packed green leaves.

'Henna', a striking new coleus, is a must-have for the summer garden. It grows 2 feet tall and 16 inches wide, and can fill a medium-size pot all on its own.

Eryngium is a strikingly architectural plant of the family Apiaceae that is native to Iran and the Caucasus.

Celosia makes striking bouquets of cut flowers and can be dried for floral arrangements. To dry, cut the stems near the ground when they are in full bloom, remove the leaves, and hang upside down in a dark, dry spot in the garage or shed.

Coleus are also quite striking when they are planted in a container and grown as a house plant.
By removing the flower spikes as they develop, and keeping the plant pinched back, the Coleus can be kept growing as a perennial for several seasons.

Though not as visually striking at any one point in time the wildflower garden offers far more diversity in plant variety over the course of a season and a more diverse floral display than a perennial or annual bed.

Ornamental beans like scarlet runner beans produce striking, bright red blooms followed by beans that are edible while young. Blue hyacinth beans produce deep lilac-blue flowers which produce maroon bean pods.

Upright growing flax with striking red foliage. Grows to just over 1m, and a 1m wide in most areas . Develops more colour in the cooler months. Very low maintenance. Looks great in mass plantings or as feature plant. Can be grown in pots.

Color strategy.Both harmonious and contrasting color strategies are striking. One option is to group pots of flowers with like colors with one pot of different colored flowers mixed in for dramatic impact.

If you live in a frost-free area, tropicals can be long-lived and striking container plants.

Leaves build architecture. Used as hedging, ground cover, background, or striking specimen, foliage defines garden contours and skylines.

But, most home gardeners grow them for their fern-like, silvery foliage. They are a strikingly attractive plant in the flowerbed, and perfect for border edging. Dusty Miller plants, are an easy to grow perennial. Some people grow them as annuals.

EXOTIC -- Strictly speaking, a plant which is not native to the area, but popularly any unusual or striking plant.
F1 HYBRID -- A first generation offspring of two purebred strains. An Fl hybrid is generally more vigorous than an ordinary hybrid.

Lady's Slipper Orchids or Paphiopedilums are noted for their long lasting, waxy flowers and striking foliage. Their compact habit makes them perfect for the light garden.
