String algae - hair algae - blanket algae
Typically referred to as pond scum, pond moss, string algae, and blanket algae. This filamentous algae bond with other filamentous algae creating strings and lime-green mats floating on the surface of a pond.
String algae is the most troublesome. You can remove it by hand or with a tool designed specifically for string algae. You can also rely on a number of different natural and chemical controls.
Clean out string algae when you find it growing in your garden pond. You can remove the string algae from the sides of your pond by hand, or you can add barley straw "mini bales" to the pond to control algae growth.
