Symptoms: Stunted growth. Leaves can become limp, curl, or drop. Seed stalks also become limp and bend over.

Krummholz- The stunted growth habit, literally crooked wood, caused by wind and found in certain tree species at their upper limit of distribution.

Damage: Yellow leaves, stunted growth, lack of vigor.

The damage they do to plants includes mutations and stunted growth in the new foliage that often appear as curling in the leaves, and poor blooms on flowering plants.

Feeding on the primary buds is by far the more serious damage by this insect, causing yield loss and stunted growth from secondary or tertiary buds. No fruit develops on canes where the primary and secondary buds were destroyed, as shown in (Fig. 8).

Generally speaking, a lawn that needs nitrogen shows yellowing leaves and stunted growth. The ratio of nutrients is expressed right on the bag of fertilizer you buy at the lawn care shop or have applied by your lawn service.

Small, pale leaves and stunted growth may signal fertilizer need, but first rule out disease, insects, physical damage, and environmental stress such as flooding or drought.

Common signs of fungal disease include foliage loss, stunted growth and droopy leaves. Unfortunately, it's easy to mistake wilting as a sign of thirst instead of a fungal disease, so infected plants tend to get watered more, exacerbating the problem.

Sometimes an iris will exhibit stunted growth and foliage that resembles corrugated cardboard. This condition is not serious and will not kill the plant. It is called "pineappling" and is not contagious to other plants.

Watch for signs of stress, such as wilting leaves, leaf scorch, discoloration of foliage, and stunted growth. Determine what is causing the stress, and take steps to correct it.

A phosphorous deficiency is usually associated with dark green foliage and stunted growth. As in nitrogen deficiency, the stems may appear purple.

If you move the bulbs too quickly from cold storage to a hot, dry house, the shock maybe too much and result in stunted growth, shrivelled flower buds and withered or discoloured foliage.

Mosaic symptoms include yellow leaves and stunted growth. Control aphids and cucumber beetles, which spread the virus.
Rust causes reddish brown spots on leaves, stems, and pods.

Potassium (K) - chemical involved in regulation of protein synthesis and starch production in plants. Plants short in potassium may show stunted growth, weak stems and root systems, and/or spotted and curled leaves.

A severe infestation will cause wilting, discolouration and stunted growth of a plant. They also excrete a sticky honeydew which could attract a black sooty mould. Another type of mealy bug lives on the root system of the plant in the soil.

Test results indicate the amount of available soil nutrients including nitrate nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iron, copper and manganese. Lack of one of these nutrients could cause stunted growth or yellowing leaves in plants.

If the leaf veins are green but the area between them is yellow, suspect an iron deficiency. Plants with a phosphorus deficiency often have a reddish or purplish cast. Stunted growth may mean there is an overall shortage of essential nutrients.

Tuber and root crops, such as potatoes and carrots, benefit from phosphorus applications. Watch for stunted growth, dead older leaves or red or purple leaves and stems. These symptoms may suggest a need for more phosphorus.

Economic damage occurs in the form of aborted blossoms (photo 2-4), reduced fruit finish quality, reduced vigor, poor return bloom and yield of bearing trees, and stunted growth and poor form of nonbearing trees.

When trying to determine the cause of a plant's problem, you also have to rule out such things as too much wind or sun, which can lead to leaf scorch and over-crowding. The latter can cause stunted growth and disease problems.
