Succulent A fleshy plant that hold water in itself, usually in the leaves or stem. Thickened, juicy, fleshy tissues that are more or less soft in texture.

Low subshrubs, such as rock roses, provide useful low level structure and mix well with perennials, but they also make a reliable display on their own (image 2).

The Firecracker plant (Russelia equisetiformis), also known as the Coral plant or Fountain plant, is a warm weather subshrub well-known for its inch-long bright red flowers that resemble small firecrackers.

This drought-tolerant subshrub is worth growing for its vivid color alone, but the best surprise has been the plant's hardiness and adaptability.

This second group of plants, most used for Roman topiary, contains more familiar perennials and subshrubs. These plants ask for far less space and are thus more suited to city gardeners.

Hibiscus is a diverse genus made up of roughly 220 species of annuals, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, subshrubs, and trees, which grow wild in many tropical, subtropical, and warm-temperate regions around the world.

This gangly, heat-loving subshrub is widely used in the summertime landscape. Its cheerful yellow, orange and pink flowers attract bees, butterflies and even hummingbirds to the garden.

C. dichotoma -- An upright subshrub, this produces succulent growth with forked green-gray stems and scattered linear leaves in pairs. Lemon-yellow eggwhisk flowers about an inch long occur at tips and joints of branches.

Culinary sage refers to a small group of the genus Salvia. These are evergreen perennial subshrubs with woolly grayish leaves that add an earthy freshness to foods. Spikes of purple/blue flowers appear in mid-summer.
