Subsoil
This is the layer below the top soil which is usually less fertile and of poorer texture.

Subsoil. Beyond the layer of topsoil is the subsoil, which is often made up of several less distinct horizons. The subsoil is important too, though it doesn't contain as much biological life.

Subsoil: The usually less fertile soil below the topsoil.
Succulent: Plants like cacti with fleshy leaves and stems adapted to retain water.

Subsoil-Soil layers of varying consistencies found beneath the topsoil. They contain little or no humus.

The subsoil also is very important. Hard shale, rock ledges, gravel beds, deep sand, or hardpan under the surface may make the development of garden soil extremely difficult or impossible.

This will control most annual weeds, alleviate subsoil compaction and permit a bonding of the topsoil to the subsoil and improve root penetration and water movement.

Having dealt with the nightmare problems of builders` rubble and subsoil, heavy clay and appalling drainage, and gangs of galahs looking for a good feed and stripping out my newly planted seedlings, ...

When leveling, it is best to create two separate piles (one for the topsoil, and the other for the subsoil) so the two are not mixed in the process.

When pipe-turf cannot be got conveniently, a good wedge drain may answer well, when the subsoil is a strong, stiff clay; but if the subsoil be only moderately so, a thorn drain, with couples below, will do still better; ...

If you plant a tree in shallow topsoil over a compacted subsoil - a common situation in newer housing developments - the first "crack" or "path" in the soil that a tree root encounters may be your drainage field trench.

Soil pH is determined by mineral content in the subsoil. pH is the symbol for the logarithm of the reciprocal of Hydrogen ion concentration in gram atoms per liter. For example, a pH of 5 indicates a concentration of .

Fork over the subsoil and add 1kg of bone dust or meal. Mix equal parts of stable, cow or poultry manure and replace to form a mound.

Horizon B: Subsoil
The subsoil is the layer of soil below the topsoil. Not much plant or organic material is found here. It is mostly clay and other mineral deposits such as iron and calcium carbonate.

Because there is no subsoil to draw on, containers must be watered more often than ground plantings. In early spring, the new plants do not need as much water as they will later on because they are small and the weather is cooler.

The soil used includes some subsoil and Darren Doherty, the Education Co-ordinator, uses the Albrecht method to make soil improvements. This entails using a soil test to reveal any nutrient deficiencies.

Dig out the topsoil to a full spade's depth, and loosen the exposed subsoil with a fork. Then spread a 15 cm (6 in) layer of rubble, broken bricks or similar hardcore, and tread or ram firm.

One common interface problem occurs when we transplant grass sod grown on Michigan peat or muck soils onto the excavated subsoil clay that is found at many new home sites.

Below the top soil, is the subsoil. It may have a number of layers each with their own characteristics.

It's a good idea to loosen the remaining subsoil in the depression with a shovel or garden fork. Next, return some of the topsoil, amended with compost, and sand if necessary.

Fork over and break up the lower 25 cm (10 in) of subsoil in the hole and then dig in a large bucketful of garden compost or well rotted manure.

You can improve soil drainage through cultivation, taking special care to break up subsoil hardpan layers that prevent water movement. Hardpans are caused by using machine tillers at the same depth time after time.

2) A compacted layer of subsoil produced by digging to the same depth over time, through which roots can't penetrate.
3) A surface pan may occur when topsoil is compacted by walking or rolling, or following heavy rain.
Panicle ...

When installing a new garden on a site that has been bulldozed down to the subsoil or compacted by heavy equipment, you'll need lots of soil amendments â€- perhaps even a fresh layer of topsoil â€- before planting. Hire a tractor to amend large areas.

Seeds and seedlings demand moisture close to the soil's surface, but more established plants need deep watering to develop roots that will find water in the subsoil when drought strikes. Just be careful not to overwater! ...

Don't despair if you've just moved into a new home that has compacted subsoil where a front lawn should be or if your old lawn looks like a worn-out rug. The time and effort required to create a lush green lawn are probably less than you think. How?

Raised Bed - Step 4
If the subsoil is mostly clay, drill ½-inch weep (or drainage) holes at regular intervals along the base of the bottom frame.

By turning the subsoil, adding amendments, and turning once more, you don't disrupt the soil structure too terribly, and you create an environment where roots can grow deep and plants can grow strong.

1/ If planting trees in an area of grass or uncultivated ground prepare the soil by breaking up the subsoil and working in plenty of organic matter.
2/ Do not use spent mushroom compost as it is too alkaline.

Use weeds as rotation crops; they bring up subsoil minerals and protect against many insects.

7. Fill in the rest of the planting hole with the remaining topsoil and subsoil. Firm down the soil around the tree and make a "dish" or depression to encourage water to drain toward the tree.

Refers to organisms which live where there is sandy subsoil.

Worm tunnels aerate the soil, improve drainage and bring up minerals from the subsoil. Earthworm activity contributes to good soil structure.
Compost is a soil conditioner.

drainage The ability of soil to transmit water through the surface and subsoil.
drip tip A pointed leaf tip helping to drain water from the leaf surface.

Their tunnels aid root growth in plants, and they are natural soil tillers, bringing minerals up from subsoil and breaking down organic material.

If your planned patio area doesn't have stable subsoil, increase the stability of the area with gravel, fill, and sand. Each layer must be well-tamped and level.

Perhaps the tomatoes' roots absorb some root exudate of the basil, or "breathe" some secretion of this sweet smelling herb. Or, as in the case of the pigweed, the deep roots of a plant will bring nutrients up from the subsoil to the benefit of the ...

They provide shelter, pollen and nectar. One of the things you hate about your weeds is their vast root systems, which make it hard to pull them up. Yet, those roots help to feed and aerate the subsoil of your garden.

from those that are light and sandy to heavier clays, or even to adobe types of soil that dry like concrete. These soils commonly are found in new housing developments where, often, all the topsoil has been removed, leaving only the clay subsoil.

Three inches of excess water will remove about 50 percent of the soluble salts in a soil. Five inches of excess water will remove approximately 90 percent. When leaching, apply water at a rate that does not exceed the permeability of the subsoil.
