In the wild, there will be the 'species' plant, which just has the Genus and species name. But nature is a contrary beast and plants may evolve that are very similar to the 'species' but have subtle differences.

Subspecies (abbreviated to ssp. or subsp.) - a distinct variant usually because of growing location (i.e. inland vs. coastal), these are recognised as a different subspecies.

Subspecies - A subclass of the genus that groups members by their geographical location or other descriptive variation. Also known as a variety.

subspecies A major division of a species, more general in classification than a cultivar or variety.
succession The progression of a plant community to a stable mixture of plants.

Variety names are subspecies of a given plant. The terms subspecies and variety are often used interchangeably. A variety is a plant that is slightly different from the species in some minor but noticeable way and may some day become a species.

(L. varietas, variety) a taxonomic group below the species used in different senses by different specialists, including a race, stock, strain, breed, subspecies, geographical race, or mutant.

Hardiness: Hardiness depends on the species or subspecies, though some are hardy to Zone 5. Most withstand a moderate freeze. In marginal areas, grow oregano as an annual or in containers that can overwinter indoors.

The lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) grows wild across the northern regions of Eurasia, while a subspecies, the dwarf lingonberry (V. v-i. ssp. minus), is native to northern Canada, Alaska and the northeastern U.S.

Greek oregano, subspecies hirtum of O. vulgare, is recommended as the best type of oregano for cooking. Oregano is a half-hardy perennial that can be grown outdoors as an annual or indoors as a perennial.

Beyond the most basic botanical binomial that's mentioned here, there are infraspecific ranks, such as subspecies, variety or forma for naturally occurring varieties. Cultivated varieties are even more complex.

Amongst the best-known of the Hoya species, the five recognised subspecies of Hoya australis are found in Queensland, NSW, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Papua New Guinea.
