Sward
A poetic term for an expanse of turf, often used when describing a closely cut lawn.

 


It develops a very think sward of grass. Kikuyu grows from seed and also runners. In areas where it grows best it has a habit of popping up everywhere including garden beds and can be a bit of a weed in gardens.

In my Japanese garden, I use this diminutive groundcover in patches where it's intended to symbolize a green sward in a forest glade.

Here he laid out a carpet of mountain mint (Pycnanthemum muticum), and there a running sward of fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides). He added a whole host of native trees-hackberry, witch hazel, alders, oaks-to frame and punctuate the meadow.

In summer time evergreen couch gives a beautiful green sward. Couch is the generic name for many types of lawn turf such as Santa Ana, Casa Blanca and the fine-leaved American couch, among others.
