Tall fescue is well suited for growing in areas between streets and sidewalks, because it resists the wear of foot traffic from people getting in and out of cars.

 


Tall fescues have been the subject of much improvement and breeding. The resulting turf types make a good lawn if they comprise 100 percent of the lawn.

Tall fescue and other cool-season grasses are typically mowed at taller heights than St. Augustine or Bermuda grasses. Hence, the tell-tale rings often seen from Brown Patch fungi on warm-season lawns may not appear.

Tall Fescue is a very hardy form of Fescue which is a tufting turf grass. Tall Fescue is not a running lawn it grows more in bunches and the bunches form together to form a lawn. Fescues are grown from seed and can be a very cheap lawn to establish.

In warm climates, cool-season grasses like perennial ryegrass and tall fescue will die out as spring's heat arrives so you can establish your turf of choice for the growing season.

Try native buffalo grass or rhizomatous tall fescue (RTF) to create a luxurious lawn that needs less fertilizer and water.
Mow your lawn high and often, removing only one-third of the grass blade at each mowing.

This group of herbicides should not be used on bermudagrass overseeded with a cool-season turfgrass or on tall fescue, as they are injurious to cool-season turfgrasses.

Lawns composed of cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue are best aerified in the fall, when there is less heat stress and danger of invasion by weedy annuals.

The most common cool-season grasses include fine fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue.

Tall Fescues germinate in 7 to 10 days. Use 8 to 10 pounds of seed per thousand square feet. Plant in early fall or spring. Grows well in full sun to very light shade.

Look for 'reduced maintenance'cultivars and blends of turf grasses, including Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and fine fescue (Festuca rubra) cultivars that have been bred for turf.

Set your mower to cut at the high end of the recommended range: 1 1/2 inches for bent grass; 2 inches for bluegrass and perennial ryegrass; 3 inches for tall fescue. Taller grass shades the soil, reducing evaporation.

Fine Fescues are more cold and shade tolerant than tall fescue. Fescue grows faster than bermuda and will stand out in a yard that has a mix of grasses, meaning you may have to mow a mixed grass yard a little more often.

There are many drought-tolerant native grasses such as Buffalograss, Fairway crested wheatgrass, and Blue gramagrass. Non-native drought resistent grasses include Kentucky Bluegrass, Canada Bluegrass, and Hard Fescue, Tall Fescue, and Red Fescue.

Jamestown and Banner fine fescues are more commonly attacked than FL-1, Mom Frr 25 and Mom Frr 33. In general, perennial ryegrasses, fine fescues and tall fescues with endophytes are highly resistant to this pest.

There are also new slow-growing grass varieties (fine fescues, tall fescues, bentgrass, and perennial rye) that take fewer mowings to keep them trim.
