TAMPING - A method by which one will press that soil around a plant that has just been planted making sure soil is secure and firm around the roots.

Wet a tamping board and firmly press the materials down into the cement to ensure they do not sit too far above the surface of the cement, making them an unsafe surface to walk on.

Tamping berms is important in order to prevent the possibility of collapse as well as to keep any air pockets heaving up plants and drying them out.

Tamp the soil to compact it, using a tamping tool or the back of a hoe. Add additional soil as needed to bring it level with the turf.

Butt each piece up closely to the last and ensure good contact with the soil by tamping down firmly with the back of the rake.

Center it in the hole; shovel in soil, tamping to close any air pockets. Roll back any exposed burlap. Cut any plastic ties. After the hole is half filled, water thoroughly. Finish filling the hole and soak soil again.
