Taxonomy is the classification of life forms into distinct groups. Linnaeus (Carl von Linné), a Swedish botanist of the 18th century developed the taxonomy of plants and initiated the binomial system of nomenclature.

First, there's identifying what group of plants the specimen belongs to ("taxonomy"). Then there's determining the correct way to refer to that group of plants ("nomenclature").

Taxonomy is the scientific study of the proper classification of organisms so that there will be no confusion.

In my first plant taxonomy class, we learned to identify families by a gut feeling (or "gestalt" as my prof called it). Once you can look at a plant and know its family, it is pretty easy to use a key to figure out the genus and species.

By today's standards, early plant nomenclature and taxonomy is laughable. For example, one school of thought back in Theophrastus' day held that the morphology, or shape, of a plant determined its usefulness.

It discusses taxonomy and nomenclature. However, don't let this scientific information put you off or make you feel the book will be too difficult to read. You can always move straight to chapter two.
