The teepee poles can be whatever length you decide. They should be tall enough so that the child who will be playing in the bean teepee will be able to stand up comfortably in the center.

 


Snappy teepee
About a decade ago, snap peas-the now well-known 'Sugar Snap' was the first-made big news. A brand new vegetable, snap peas combined the fibreless pods of snow peas with plump, sweet peas inside.

"Bean teepees" combine kids' play and food production. Poles and brush form the framework that these young pole beans begin to climb.

For growing vining summer squash or any kind of gourds, traditional teepees made from stakes or saplings are useful and handsome.

As a special treat, talk about constructing a bean teepee, using tall bamboo stakes or something just as high. Bunch the poles together in the shape of a teepee and secure them at the top with wire.

What about if you work together, and build a teepee frame out of six foot bamboo poles or inexpensive 2x2's which have been joined at the top?

Insert trellises in the back of the border to support these plants, or use freestanding teepees or tuteurs in the middle of a bed or border.

Pieces of fiberglass, wood or sturdy cardboard fitted together in the shape of a teepee with open sides can protect transplants growing in raised beds.

Straight branches an inch or so in diameter, or bamboo, which our area has in unfortunate abundance, provide free material for building rustic teepees where vines can clamber in the midst of a vegetable plot or cottage garden.

For hills, sow seeds 3" to 6" apart in a circle and place poles teepee-style around the circle.

Some anxious tomato growers (like me), use a product called a Wall O'Water (see picture below).We use a few Wall O'Waters, sometimes called garden teepees, to get a one to two month start on the season.

If you have a cold frame or greenhouse, or if you use row covers or water-filled teepees, you can plant tender seedlings several weeks before the last frost date.

A teepee of sticks covered with any non toxic vines makes a simple retreat. I use bird house gourds, which means we also get to make birdhouses the next winter.

I am going to make an inverted teepee for the beans. Make it with a stake, and three pieces of bamboo and tie some wire tightly around the middle. This is easy to make, it's cheap and can be used again next year.

For a grander entrance into the yard, the picket gate is repaired and leads to a redwood slope with stone steps. Jasmine grows around the rustic teepee, providing an interesting focal point and a great place for the kids to play.

And it would make short work of a twig trellis, scampering rapidly to the top of the teepee. But indoors P. vitifolia tends to pout during the winter no matter how much care and warmth you lavish upon it.

You can eat the young tender pods right off the vine. The beans can be eaten right from the pod, or you can cook them. Vines require the support of a trellis, arbor, fence or teepee. Direct-sow into garden after frost. Days to maturity: 70.
