thorax. The second of three major divisions in the body of an insect, and the one bearing the legs and wings.
thurberia weevil. A race of the boll weevil that feeds on wild cotton.
tiller. Branch stem of a grass plant.

The body is grayish-black with an upright one-half "cogwheel-like" crest on the thorax bearing 8 to 12 protruding teeth-like structures. The membrane of the front wing is coppery colored. Wheel bugs are voracious predators.

The eye color of second instar nymphs is less intense, and their thorax turns yellow and shows small lateral wing pads. With successive molts, the markings on the thorax become more prominent and the wing pads become larger (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4).

Their heads and thorax are black, and they have reddish brown wings. Native to Europe and Asia, they now inhabit six US states. These beetles are most damaging to pine trees, particularly Scotch pine, especially when they feed on the shoots.

The beetle performs this trick by snapping the first section of its thorax—the segmented middle part of its body—into a groove in the second section of the thorax.

During this remarkable transformation, the body cells within the larva begin to migrate, reassembling themselves in other places to form the adult's wings, head, antennae, thorax and legs. This may take a few days, a dry summer or an entire winter.

Pollinating Stick: Also called a bee stick, this device can be nothing more than a toothpick with the thorax of a dead bee glued to one end. Fastplants.org provides this useful sketch, courtesy of the University of Wisconsin.

Dysdera have a cream-colored body with reddish legs and cephalothorax. Adults measure about ½-inch in length.

The 1/4 inch long striped cucumber beetles are conspicuously colored: black head and antennae, straw yellow thorax and yellowish wing covers with 3 distinct parallel and longitudinal black stripes.

Petiole-1) The leafstalk that connects the blade(s) to the twig. 2) The narrow stalk or stem by which the abdomen is attached to the thorax (Hymenoptera, wasps). 3) In ants, the node-like first segment of the abdomen.

haltere A small, knob-like organ (sometimes shaped like a baseball bat or bowling pin) located on the thorax of insects of the order Diptera. These take the place of hindwings and helps balance the insect in flight.

The structural differences in the various flowers ensure that the pollinia are attached to a part of the bee specific to each orchid species: The pollinia of one may be attached to the insect's eye, that of another to the top of the thorax, ...
