Thorns on twigs are sharp and numermous.

The hawthorn mealybug feeds on the sap of twigs and small branches. Heavy infestations weaken plants and cause branches to die. Sooty mold grows on the large amounts of honeydew produced by the bug, and greatly detracts from hawthorn's appearance.

Crown-of-thorns is a sun lover. Grow it at any sunny window or under fluorescent lights. If it is at a south window, shift it to more light in summer when sun is high in the sky.

Thorny Shield
Boundaries provide security, but it is best to strike a balance between imprisoning yourself and opening your garden to your surroundings. Spiky evergreen shrubs can form attractive barriers that will deter most intruders.

Thorns Sharp outgrowths of the twig that represent modified branches; usually bearing leaf scars, or branched.
Tomentose With a wooly covering of short hairs.
Tomentulose Microscopically tomentose or woolly.

thorn A hard, sharp-pointed, leafless branch. Hawthorne is an example of a plant that produces thorns. See prickle.
tiller A shoot that arises from a plant's crown. Generally associated with grass species.

Hawthorn
Botanical Name: Crataegus.
Hardiness: Zones 3 to 9.
Bloom Time: Early summer.
Size: 20 to 45 feet high, 20 to 30 feet wide.

Firethorn (Pyracantha rogersiana )
Pyracantha grows quite well in pots, although it won't reach the size it does in the ground. The long-lasting red, orange or yellow berries are a natural for fall.

Thorns and spines exemplify one type of plant defence mechanism. The Prickly Cycad Encephalartos altensteinii is an ancient plant which uses a number of techniques. Its leaves are produced and hardened in one flush so that they are less palatable.

Firethorn produces bright red or pale yellow berries from fall through winter. It makes a great addition to Christmas decorating if trained around doors and windows.

Firethorn, Pyracantha, can be grown as an espalier. Most of the intensive pruning this technique requires should be done while the plants are dormant in winter.

Of the ones near me (mid-Atlantic USA), English Thornless and Heritage Fall are the most popular, and I'm very found of their edible wild berry cousin, the wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius).

Note: There are thornless blackberry plants available for cultivation.

For rose gardening with arches and walls, Zephirine Drouhin produces large, fragrant flowers with few thorny stems.

Shrubs For Sandy Soil
