Till the Soil
Turn over or mix soil layers in vegetable or flower gardens. Incorporate remaining plant debris as you till the soil. Plant material helps enrich the soil by speeding the decay of organic matter.

Till the natural dirt so that it is softened to at least 2 feet below the surface, using a spade for smaller, easy-to-work spaces or a rototiller for larger areas or new beds.

Till three to five cubic yards of decomposed manure, compost or sphagnum peat moss, along with fertilizers called for by the soil test results, into the top six to eight inches of soil.

Till my existing bed to a depth of 8 inches. Amend the soil buy adding organic matter (like Canadian peat moss) as needed to enrich my clay soil.

Till this in deeply, mixing well with the existing soil and organic matter. Never simply throw a handful of fertilizer into the hole where the bulb is to sit, as it may harm the newly forming roots and encourage bulb rot.

Till as deeply as possible to break up the soil beneath. If a garden is tilled to the same depth each year, a hardpan layer may develop just below the usual tilling depth.

Till beds a week before planting to allow seedlings to sprout, then hoe them under, and mulch deeply. Pulled plants can reroot. Late summer and early fall seedlings can set seed when only a few inches tall.

No-till crops reduce the number of trips over a field by heavy equipment, which can help build soil structure. It takes decades to repair soil structure. Rutted areas are particularly difficult to restore to their natural state.
