Tilth
The crumbly, finely broken-down surface layer of soil that has been carefully prepared for sowing seeds.

On the other hand, infertile soil that has good physical properties (tilth) can be made productive by using compost, organic matter, lime, commercial fertilizer, and other soil improving materials.

Tilth-The physical condition of a soil, e.g., aggregation, porosity, etc., and its ability to support seed germination and plant growth.

Improves tilth, condition, and structure of soil.
What Happens to Organic Matter Applied to the Soil or Compost Pile?

Promoting Good Tilth
Soil that has good physical qualities is said to be in good tilth.

So remove possible slug shelters like boards, stones or bricks from near the plants, and a nice fine tilth is better for combatting slugs than a clumpy soil surface.

Create a level bed of soil with a fine tilth and then lay the first turves against a straight edge such as a plank.
Lay alternate courses of turves in staggered rows. Work from a board to protect the soil.

Soil structure & tilth
When the soil is neither too wet nor too dry, dig a hole 6 to 10 inches deep. Separate an intact section about the size of a soup can and break it apart with your fingers.

Organic matter improves tilth (fluffiness) and opens the pores of the soil, allowing easier penetration of roots, air and water.

Oddly enough, that same OM that improves the tilth of clay soils can also be useful in sandy soils - but with a different effect. The OM helps improve sandy soil's ability to retain moisture and nutrients.

You will have to cultivate the soil to a fine tilth and then sow the seeds at the depth recommended on the packet. In cooler areas, or where you want early crops, seeds will need to be sown in trays or flats indoors.

tilth. In order to achieve suitable soil conditions preparations should be made well
before sowing. When spring sowing is proposed turn the soil over in as large
lumps as possible during the autumn and winter and allow it to weather. It will then ...

Organic matter improves the fertility, the structure and the tilth of all kinds of soils. In particular, organic matter provides a continuous source of nitrogen and other nutrients that plants need to grow.

Rake and cross-rake the surface to bring it to an even tilth. Then give it a good watering. Leave to settle and mature for about a week. This period of rest is important.

Planting at this time will also keep the tilth and fertility of yur garden's soil at premium levels, allowing your garden vegetables to grow stronger and healthier throughout the fall and winter, ...

Organic mulches improve soil fertility and build good tilth. Some examples are tree leaves, garden compost, grass clippings, chipped wood or bark, pine needles, seed or nut hulls, aged manure, and even seaweed.

Next, enrich the soil and improve its tilth by digging in compost or composted manure 30 to 40 centimetres deep.

Taking good care of the soil improves its tilth, making it easier to work and easier to control weeds. Here, Marcia uses one of her favorite tools, a stirrup hoe, to take out weeds.

Organic matter improves all soils, giving sandy soil more tilth and nutrients and improving drainage in clay soils. Using hay and compost as mulches around your plants is a practical way to improve very poor soil.

Decaying organic matter, or humus, will help give your soil tilth. It helps sandy soil by retaining water that would otherwise wash away and it corrects clay soil by making it looser, so that air, water and roots can penetrate.

Surface compaction, or 'capping', which occurs most commonly on silty soils where little organic matter is present, or where not much vegetation covers the soil. If soil worked to a fine tilth becomes wet (through rain or irrigation), ...

Using the easiest method of composting, make a pile of organic waste, turn it periodically to keep oxygen levels high and reduce foul odors, and let nature do the rest. The resulting compost will improve soil tilth, ...

where the soil is largely clay, topsoil is being put to good use for lawns and gardens. It is sold bagged with the necessary amendments already added. Topsoil can also be thoroughly mixed with other soils to improve the original soil's weight, tilth ...

Adding organic materials such as peat, composted manure, or leaves will help improve soil structure and tilth. That said, hostas are generally adaptable and survive in a wide range of soils, adding to their ease of growing and popularity.

to educate growers about characterizing and regenerating seeds especially from the National Plant Germplasm System, and evaluate the feasibility of cooperatively marketing seeds, funded by the USDA's Fund for Rural America program. Oregon Tilth is a ...
