The tomato hornworm is the larval stage of the Five-spotted Hawk Moth. Both stages of this insect are formidable to see, but the hornworm is not a welcome sight in the vegetable garden.

Tomato hornworm caterpillars are usually from 3 to 4 inches long. They very quickly make a hearty meal not only out of the tomato plant leaves, but sometimes also the tomato fruit itself.

Tomato hornworms are the most familiar insect pests. These caterpillars grow to an awesome size, three inches or longer, with a fearsome looking "horn" on their back end, the purpose of which is unknown other than to scare gardeners.

The tomato hornworm—a large, white-striped, green caterpillar—is an easy-to-spot pest. Just hand pick and destroy, or spray plants with Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis).
The tomato hornworm is a large voracious caterpillar.
A simple and easily made repellent spray can be made from hot peppers. Mix two teaspoons of cayenne pepper, one quart of water and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid (not laundry detergent).
The Tomato Hornworm grows to about 4 inches long and can eat up your tomato plants. After seeing chewed leaves look for this green caterpillar. Just pick them off and dispose of them.

I believe this opens the door for more pest problems, such as the tomato hornworm. The method I recommend is using concrete reinforcing wire to make your own tomato cages. The wire can be purchased at most any hardware or do it yourself store.
Cutworms will topple them, cabbage loopers and tomato hornworms will defoliate them, and a lot of other less identifiable varieties of pests will happily munch right along.
In the vegetable garden, try a littlecompanion plantingsuch as using borage to repel tomato hornworms and attract bees. Crop rotation and using plants with disease resistance are helpful for naturally avoiding diseases.
Watch for insects that can attack your new vegetables such as this tomato hornworm.

Host pests include various species of aphids, garden webworm, tomato hornworm, armyworms, strawberry leaf roller, and tent caterpillar, among others.
In some cases, as with Tomato Hornworms, you can simply pick the offending bug off the plant by hand and dispose of it. In other cases, you will have to plan a strategy and then carry out the plan.
Also bear in mind that parasitic wasps, being marketed to gardeners as controls for aphids, tomato hornworms, and European corn borers among others, are nonspecific and kill butterfly eggs and caterpillars as well.
Purslane rarely develops in mulched areas, and mulch placed over purslane usually will smother it. There is a hornworm, similar to tomato hornworm, that feeds on purslane, but it rarely does significant damage.
Hatchlings technically are called larvae, but more commonly, caterpillars. They're quite distinctive. Some - such as swallowtail caterpillars and tomato hornworms - are remarkable in coloration or size.
