The designation given to a pesticide indicating its relative level of toxicity is called the Lethal Dose, or LD 50 value. This value identifies the dosage rate necessary to kill 50 percent of a test population.

Toxicity

Toxicity. Most Solanaceae members have alkaloids, groups of complex chemicals, in their roots, leaves and flowers. Alkaloids can be hallucinogens, stimulants or out-right toxic.

A note about insecticidal soap: A study at (ifas.ufl.edu) has found that some plants are sensitive to insecticidal soap causing phytotoxicity.

Allelopathic: Toxicity from a plant that inhibits the growth of other plants.
Alkaline soil: Soil with a pH above 7.0
Amending soil: To improve the soil usually by adding organic matter.

However, in palms, this rarely if ever has anything to do with toxicity as most palms are NOT toxic.

Compare pesticides based on how hazardous they are. The signal word on the label indicates a product's toxicity. For example, products marked CAUTION are less toxic than those marked WARNING, and should be considered first.
