When transplanting, seedlings in peat pots, peat blocks, or on sod squares are not removed but are planted intact, container and all. This avoids any transplanting shock.

A: The transplanting of most plants, whether they are trees or shrubs, is best done in winter. Most plants are dormant at that particular time of year, and they do not feel the shock of the transplanting process as much when they are 'sleeping'.

When the seeds sprout, remove the plastic. In a few days, the seedlings will crowd each other. Tip the pot and gently pour the seedlings and potting soil out onto a clean surface.

Transplanting Moss
Moss can be transplanted quite easily. Some varieties (such as fern moss) can be scraped up in large pieces and relocated, much like sod. The moss should be well-moistened and pushed firmly into the soil in the desired location.

Most annuals (those that are killed by frost and need warm soil and air to thrive) should be transplanted after the last average frost date. Don't be in a rush to get them outside if the long-term forecast looks threatening.

After the danger of frost is past and temperatures are consistently above 50° F at night and 65°F during the day, transplant your tomatoes into the garden. Space them as directed on seed packets or plastic inserts.

Before transplanting outdoors, "harden them off" by bringing them outside during the daytime. This allows them to get used to the outdoor environment, but protects them from cold evenings.

Where needed, a fungicide soil drench at the time of transplanting will reduce the disease on cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower. Two teaspoons of PCNB (Terraclor 75% WP) should be added to one gallon of water.
