Trap crop-A crop or portion of a crop intended to attract pests so they can be controlled by treating a relatively small area or by destroying the trap crop and the pests together.

 


Trap Crops - If you can’t repel a pest, throw it a sacrificial plant.

Trap Cropping. These plants draw insects away from plants commonly eaten by humans.

Divert pests from a desirable crop through 'trap cropping' - a method that requires you to either plant or let grow a species that will attract pests away from your desirable crop.

Some studies have shown that companion planting or trap cropping (growing the bugs' favorite foods in order to lure them away from your garden crops and into the trap crop where you will catch and destroy them) can provide some control as well.

For this reason, organic gardeners often sow them at the base of fruit trees as a trap crop. My neighbor, Dave, plants nasturtiums every season, swearing that they keep pests off his tomato vines.

Although field research hasn't been done and the plants' effectiveness as a pest control is inconclusive, curious gardeners may want to try planting geraniums as a trap crop with other beetle favorites such as roses.
