Pit Trenching
The secret to successful composting is to select an approach and technique that suits your needs and lifestyle.

Uses include: digging; edging beds; trenching; cutting through roots; and slicing open bags of mulch, fertilizer and soil. Let the sharp edge act as a weeding scuffle.

Prepare the soil for planting rhubarb by deep trenching a hole 1 meter wide and by the same depth if possible. Fork over the subsoil and add 1kg of bone dust or meal. Mix equal parts of stable, cow or poultry manure and replace to form a mound.

The digging variety
can perform a similar function to the digging spade except that it provides only a
complete inversion of the soil, whereas the spade can be used for both trenching and
double digging as well.

A girdled root cuts off or reduces the amount of water reaching the needles, causing purple needles. Any activity that damages spruce roots (like trenching or digging) also prevents them from absorbing water well, producing the off-color.
